Former Valparaiso University men's soccer head coach
Mike Avery will be inducted into the Indiana Soccer Hall of Fame on Feb. 28.
Avery has coached Fort Wayne Football Club since its inception in 2020 and is set to guide Fort Wayne FC into its first season of professional soccer in USL League One. In USL League Two, a pre-professional level, Avery coached Fort Wayne Football Club to Valley Division championships in 2023, 2024 and 2025 and appearances in the Central Conference Semifinals the past two seasons.
Avery led the Valpo men's soccer program from 2007 to 2019, accumulating a program-record 91 career victories. His 2009 team set a program record for victories in a single season with 10, a mark later matched by his 2016 side. The 2011 Horizon League Coach of the Year, Avery led a program that had enjoyed just one winning season in the 24 years prior to his arrival to six winning seasons in his first 10 years. His 2011 team won the regular-season Horizon League crown. While at Valpo, Avery coached 47 all-league honorees including five conference Goalkeepers of the Year.
Prior to leading the Brown & Gold, Avery served as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville (2006-2007), an assistant at the University of Notre Dame (2000-2006), head coach at Cal State San Bernardino (1997-1999) and head coach at Bethel University (1994-1996).
