MVC Women's Soccer Weekly Notebook

Regular-Season Comes to a Close Next Thursday

Player of the Week: Alexa Aylward, Drake
Defender of the Week: Lillie Tabor, Belmont
Goalkeeper of the Week: Sofie Hansen, Indiana State

Aylward led Drake to a 4-2 victory over league leader Southern Illinois on Sunday as she scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Bulldogs' comeback efforts against the Salukis. It marks the first multi-goal game in her career, while her assist came in the 68th minute on Drake's fourth and final goal. Aylward has seven goals on the season, which ranks second on Drake and tied fourth overall in the league. She has scored four goals against league opponents, which is tied for the second most in the league.

Tabor scored her first career goal in what could be the final home game of her career. The Bruin back line allowed only three shots in a 3-0 win against visiting Valparaiso. She added an assist on the team's third goal against the Beacons.

Hansen recorded seven saves and a .875 save percentage in Indiana State's 1-1 draw at Murray State. The sophomore goalkeeper played all 90 minutes and made multiple key stops against a Racer attack that produced 15 shots. Her seven saves were a season-high in conference play and helped the Sycamores secure an important road result.

Thursday, Nov. 5 -- Belmont at Murray State

  • Three teams (Drake, Illinois State, Southern Illinois) have guaranteed a spot in the six-team championship. No team has been eliminated. Every team, mathematically, could still host (either quarters or semis), although only Drake, Illinois State, and Southern Illinois can earn a bye into the semis (i.e., 1 or 2 seed).  All three teams rank in the Top 150 of the RPI report: Southern Illinois (84), Drake (121), Illinois State (144).
  • Southern Illinois' school-record 11-match winning streak came to an end Sunday with a 4-2 loss to Drake. It was one shy of the league's all-time record, established by Loyola in 2019 (the Ramblers won 12-straight that year.)
  • Southern Illinois' Nao Katamoto leads the MVC and ranks sixth nationally with 0.60 assists per game.
  • Murray State is unbeaten in five straight, the longest run of its season, with wins over Valparaiso and UIC and draws at Drake, at UNI and against Indiana State. The Racers have conceded two goals across those five matches.
  • After the Purple Aces grabbed a 2-0 lead in the final six minutes against Illinois State, ISU's Sammi Cenek scored her first goal of the season just 39 seconds later, the fourth fastest response goal in program history. The Redbirds then converted on a PK with 27 seconds left to even the match and earn a point.
  • UNI's Audrey Still is the fifth different UNI player to score a goal this year (doing so against UIC), joining Ella Ubben (2), Kailey O'Brien, Abi Roberts and Ella McGinnis (1). Panther goalkeeper Hailey Luedtke's 75 total saves and 5.7 saves per game both lead the MVC.
  • In the 1-1 draw against Murray State, Indiana State's Meagyn Riffle scored her team-leading goal, her 20th shot on goal of the season.
  • Drake's Angela Gutierrez leads the league and ranks seventh in the NCAA with five game-winning goals.
  • Brooklyn Robinson of Evansville contributed on both goals in the 2-2 draw against Illinois State on Sunday. She assisted on Josie Seehafer's goal in the 64th minute and then scored in the 84th minute.  Robinson's performance marked her fourth goal and second assist of the year.
  • Reagan Ross of Belmont earned her second brace of the season scoring her career high seventh goal of the season as the Bruins shut out visiting Valparaiso, 3-0.
  • Illinois State's Sosi Dadekian converted her third penalty kick goal of the season on Sunday against Evansville. After trailing 2-0 in the final six minutes, the Redbird offense found a spark. After cutting the deficit to one, the Redbirds continued their late offensive push, and it paid off when the Purple Aces were called for a handball in the box with 27 seconds left. Dadekian stepped to the spot and buried her attempt in the bottom-left corner, recording her third penalty-kick goal of the season and tying the match at 2-2.
  • Drake's Zoey Mahoney helped the Bulldogs to a 4-2 comeback victory over the league leaders Southern Illinois on Sunday as she picked up two assists out of Drake's four scores assisting on the equalizer and the go-ahead goal. Both assists came off her throw-ins using her signature flip throw technique. She now has eight assists on the season, which ranks second overall in the league.
  • Before this week's match at Belmont, Valpo put five goals in the back of the net last time out against Evansville in the 5-1 win, a season best for the Beacons, besting a pair of four-goal outputs earlier in the year. It was the first time Valpo has had at least three matches in a season with four or more goals since 2006. It is the Beacons' highest goal total and largest margin of victory since an identical 5-1 score line last season at Western Illinois.
  • Starting and playing in all 90 minutes as a central midfielder, UIC's Jennifer Rodriguez scored in the 35th minute of the game. About 20 yards out from goal, Rodriguez struck a right-footed shot over the Panthers' keeper to put the Flames up 2-0, helping carve a way for the Flames' first MVC win.
