EUGENE – Five Valley student-athletes earn Second-Team All-American honors, and four Valley student-athletes earn Honorable Mention All-American honors at the 2024 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Student-Athlete earn All-American honors by finishing in the top eight of the championship meet – including members of a relay, for First-Team honors and ninth through 16
th place finishes earn second-team honors. Honorable Mention honors go to the student-athletes who finished 17
th through 24
th in their respective events.

Second-Team All-American Honors:
Anthony Barmes, Drake – Hammer
Barmes took 10th overall after finishing as the runner-up in Flight 1 with a premier hammer throw of 70.04m/229'-9". His top 10 placing was good enough for Second Team All-America honors, marking the second year in a row hitting that esteemed threshold.
A native of New Zealand, Barmes will now shift his attention to international competition as he will attempt to represent his country and qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris later this summer.
Isaac Basten, Drake – 1500m
Basten competed in the men's 1500m run on Wednesday afternoon. One of the best to ever run at Drake, the veteran runner finished 16th overall with a time of 3:39.60. He did not advance to the 1500m finals, but did post a season best mark. Basten adds a seventh All-American title to his name.
Elias Foor, Indiana State - Discus
Foor's top mark of 57.29m came in his third attempt, and vaulted him into the top 15 in his NCAA Championships debut. It also represented an improvement by more than 10 meters from his second attempt of the day.
Foor put up top-10 marks in program history in three of the four throws disciplines in 2024. He was the MVC Most Valuable Athlete after putting up 26 points at the MVC Outdoor Championships, scoring in all four throws events with three top-three finishes. Foor won the discus at the conference championships, and his season-best mark of 59.51m (195-03) at Eastern Illinois in March ranked in the top 40 among all American athletes, including professionals, this season. He also set the Gibson Track and Field Complex record in the event with a throw of 59.30m (194-07) in April.
Chelby Melvin, Murray State – 400m Hurdles
Melvin's time of 57.45 was just 1.2 seconds off from qualifying for the final round on Saturday. She finished fifth in the second heat among six student-athletes from Power 5 schools. Melvin's time finished 16th, tabbing her as a Second Team All-American for her performance.
Including qualifying rounds at the respective meets she competed in this outdoor season, Melvin set a new school record in six of the last eight times she has raced in the event.
Rachel Anderson, Southern Illinois – 3000 Steeplechase
Anderson wrapped up her incredible career as a Saluki at the NCAA Track and Field Championship placing 16
th in the Women's 3000-meter steeplechase event with a time of 10:03.58. Anderson was four spots out of qualifying for the final, nine seconds short of the cutoff to advance.
"I have nothing but pride in the journey that Rachel experienced while at SIU and feel lucky to be apart of it," he said. "Though she did not make it to the final, she finished her career as a Saluki as a second team all American, and that's a huge accomplishment." -Distance Coach Brain Biekert
Honorable Mention All-American Honors:
Amiri Buchanan, Illinois State – Shot Put
Buchanan's first throw of the night went 15.91m (52-02.50), before he improved on his second throw with a mark of 17.35m (56-11.75). He saved his best throw for his final one of the evening with a toss of 17.93m (58-10) to finish in 21st place overall as he capped off a stellar career with the Redbirds.
Mattison Plummer, Illinois State – 3000 Steeplechase
Plummer ran in the second heat of the 3000m steeplechase and finished the race in a time of 10:15.78 to place 21st overall Plummer tabbed a personal-best time of 10:11.55 at the West Regional, moving her up the school's top 10 list to sixth best all-time. Her performance at the prestigious Drake Relays, where she took first in the 3,000m steeplechase in a time of 10:12.83, earned her a spot in the NCAA postseason meets after she finished on the podium and took second at the 2024 MVC Outdoor Championships in the event.
E. Grace Quinlan, Indiana State – High Jump
Placing 17th in the event, Quinlan cleared marks of 1.72m (5-07.75) and 1.77m (5-09.75) at the championships, with her clearance of 1.77m representing the second-best outdoor clearance in her career. She cleared 1.72m (5-07.75) on her third attempt, while her clearance of 1.77m (5-09.75) came on her first attempt at the height. Quinlan broke Indiana State's outdoor high jump record at the NCAA East First Round at 1.81m (5-11.25) shattered a program record which had stood for more than 25 years.
Meghan Fletcher, Murray State – High Jump
Fletcher cleared the 1.72-meter mark on her first attempt before clearing 1.77 meters on the third attempt. Despite falling short of clearing 1.82 meters, Fletcher set a new program record at the East Regionals in Lexington, Kentucky with a height of 1.84 meters. She broke her own outdoor record of 1.79 meters that was set during the 2023 season. Her 20th-place finish was four spots better than her finish at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas.
