MVC Announces Track and Field Weekly Honors (Apr. 12)

St. Louis – The Missouri Valley Conference names track and field athletes of the week honors. This week’s athletes of the week are JaVaughn Moore of Indiana State, Kayla Bell of Murray State, Anthony Brames of Drake, and Katie Fare of Northern Iowa.

Track Athlete 
JaVaughn Moore, 5th, Indiana State [Marietta, Ga.]

Moore won each of the three events he competed in at the Joe Walker Invitational, taking top spot in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. He ran the only 100m time in the field under 10.5 seconds and also had the only 200m time under 21 seconds. Moore ran a time of 10.47 (w: +1.1) in his first 100m of the season and clocked a time of 20.93 (w: +1.2) in the 200m. He also ran the first leg of the 4x100m relay that ran a time of 39.98, the second-fastest time in program history. He ranks fourth in the MVC 100m (third-fastest wind-legal time) and second in the conference in the 200m. In addition, Moore’s 100m time ranks eighth in the Great Lakes region and 60th in NCAA East Region qualifying, while his 200m time ranks third in the Great Lakes region, 36th in NCAA East Region qualifying and 71st in the nation. Indiana State’s 4x100m relay team, with Moore running the opening leg, ranks first in the MVC and the Great Lakes region, 17th in NCAA East region qualifying (16th among A teams) and 41st in the nation (36th among A teams).

Honorable Mention - Isaiah Trousil, UNI - won the 200m dash at the Fighting Illini Challenge with a 20.92.

Track Athlete 
Kayla Bell, So., Murray State, [Lynwood, Ill.]

Bell won the 800m invite division at Joe Walker Invite hosted by Ole Miss. The sophomore stopped the clock at 2:05.32 besting a field of seven that included three runners from #8 nationally ranked Ole Miss. Her time sets the fastest 800m in the Missouri Valley Conference, third in the Southeast region, 16th in the East regional qualifying, and 24th nationally.

Honorable Mention - Hassy Fashina-Bombata, Illinois State - set a new program record in the 100m Hurdlesat 13.41 seconds. 

Field Athlete 
Anthony Barmes, So. [Auckland, New Zealand]

Set the MVC men’s hammer throw record of 68.95m/226’ 2.5” (the previous being 68.81m) to win the Dutch Invitational on Friday, April 7. That heave currently ranks 16th in the NCAA, third in the Midwest Region and first by a New Zealand competitor this year. Barmes broke the facility record at Central College and has the best MVC men’s hammer throw this season by 22 feet from second place.

Honorable Mention - Cole Targgart, Indiana State - took first in the shot put and discus at the Bill Cornell Invitational. 

Field Athlete 
Katie Fare, JR., UNI [Rockford, IL]

Thrower Katie Fare continued her dominance in the circle by clinching the women's shot put with a career-best toss of 16.58 meters. After only throwing 16.14 meters in the 2022 outdoor-season, Fare now throws 16.58 meters adding a tremendous leap of power to her shot put throw. After this weekend's performance, Fare now leads the Missouri Conference in the women’s shot put with 16.58 meters three feet ahead of the next thrower. Tabbing her first, first place finish at the second meet of the 2023 outdoor-season. Fare sits 23rd in the nation and 10th in the west qualifying division. 

Honorable Mention - Jenna Pauly, Murray State - first in the MVC in the Heptathlon at 4810 points.
