The Missouri Valley Conference has named Scott Cline as its new coordinator of baseball umpires, bringing an accomplished career of collegiate officiating, umpire development and conference coordination to the role.
Cline enters the position with more than two decades of experience as a Division I baseball umpire and extensive leadership experience at the conference level. His collegiate officiating résumé includes 23 years in the Southeastern Conference, 14 years in the Atlantic Coast Conference, two years in the Big Ten Conference, three years in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, six years in the Sun Belt Conference, 12 years in the Ohio Valley Conference and nine years in the ASUN Conference. He has also worked 14 SEC Tournaments, six OVC Tournaments, four Sun Belt Tournaments, one SWAC Tournament and one ACC Tournament.
Cline's postseason experience extends to the NCAA Men's College World Series, where he has worked four College World Series, 10 Division I Super Regionals and 20 Division I Regionals. In June 2026, he also served as an ESPN Rules Analyst for the Men's College World Series, becoming the first rules analyst to serve live on set during the CWS.
In addition to his work on the field, Cline has extensive experience recruiting, training and developing umpires. He has been a part-owner of Midsouth Collegiate Umpires since 2012, where he is responsible for recruitment, training and development of a roster of umpires serving 14 colleges and universities.
Cline also brings direct conference coordinator experience to the MVC. Since 2025, he has served as a coordinator for the ACC, American Conference and Conference USA, with responsibilities including recruiting, training and assigning officials, working with conference personnel on officiating budgets, and recommending officials for NCAA postseason competition.
“I’m very excited to represent the Missouri Valley Conference,” said Cline. “We will work hard to make sure our umpires are prepared to do a great job for the Conference. I am honored to represent the league and I am very well aware of the rich baseball history of The Valley.”
As a longtime crew chief in the SEC, ACC and Big Ten, Cline has led officials in the proper enforcement of NCAA rules and policies while coordinating series and game logistics.
“Scott [Cline] brings an exceptional combination of experience, leadership and knowledge of collegiate baseball umpiring to the Missouri Valley Conference,” said MVC Commissioner, Jeff Jackson. “His extensive Division I and postseason background, along with his experience developing and assigning umpires, makes him an outstanding addition to the league.”
Cline is a 1992 graduate of Maryville College in Tennessee, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business and was a four-year letterman in baseball. He was named All-South Region and earned team MVP honors in 1990 and 1992.
He was inducted into the Maryville College Wall of Fame in 2015 and the Portland High School Hall of Fame in 2017.
With a career spanning officiating, umpire development, conference administration and national postseason baseball, Cline will lead the Missouri Valley Conference's efforts to recruit, train and assign umpires and support the conference's baseball officiating program.
