MVC Baseball Championship Game 2: No. 3 Murray State vs. No. 6 Illinois State

MURRAY, Ky. -- Murray State erased an early three-run deficit and rallied past Illinois State Redbirds baseball for a 6-4 victory Wednesday night at Johnny Reagan Field. The Racers trailed 3-0 after Illinois State plated two runs in the second inning and added a solo homer from Luke Stulga in the fourth, but Murray State steadily chipped away before taking control with a three-run seventh inning.

The comeback began in the bottom of the fourth when Colby Ott drove in a run with a single through the left side before Connor Chisolm followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2. Murray State tied the game in the sixth on Chisolm’s sacrifice fly, scoring Anthony Perritano after back-to-back hits from Perritano and Ott set the table. Illinois State briefly regained the lead in the top of the seventh on Graham Mastros’ RBI single, but the Racers answered immediately in the bottom half.

Murray State’s decisive seventh inning showcased patience and opportunism. Kainen Jorge singled and stole second before Conner Cunningham and Daylan Pena worked walks to load the bases. Perritano was then hit by a pitch to force in the tying run, and Parker Airhart lifted a sacrifice fly to center to give the Racers their first lead of the night. Murray State added an insurance run moments later when Colby Ott reached on a throwing error that allowed Pena to score and extend the advantage to 6-4.

Nic Schutte delivered one of his strongest outings of the season to earn the win, throwing a complete game while allowing four runs on seven hits across nine innings. The right-hander struck out six and worked through several traffic-filled innings to keep Murray State within striking distance until the offense broke through late. Schutte retired six of the final seven batters he faced, closing out the comeback victory and improving to 8-6 on the year.

With the win, the Racers advanced in the winner's bracket and will face No. 2 Indiana State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. CT. With their loss, the Redbirds will take on No. 5 Evansville in an elimination game at 10 a.m. CT.
