MVC Men's Soccer Weekly Notebook (Sept. 30)

ST. LOUIS -- The Missouri Valley Conference announced it's men's soccer weekly honors on Tuesday. Evansville's Andres Escudero is this week's Player of the Week and Bradley's Drew Berry is the MVC Defensive Player of the Week.

Conference News & Notes
  • The Missouri Valley Conference has a nation-leading three unbeaten teams remaining in 2025. UIC enters the week with a 7-0-2 ledger, while Belmont and Drake are each 5-0-4.
  • Evansville was the only team to pick up a win during Conference-opening weekend, earning the 3-0 victory over Bowling Green with contribution from three different goal scorers.
  • UIC’s 29 assists and 79 points check in as the second-best mark in the country in each category, while the Flames’ 25 total goals this season ranks fifth nationally. The Flames also rank in the Top 10 in Division I in goal differential (16) and scoring offense (2.78).
  • UIC’s Edouard Nys ranks second in Division I in goals (9) and points (23) while teammate Carlos Nevarez ranks third in assists with six on the year.
  • Evansville’s Andres Escudero jumped into the Top 15 nationally after notching a trio of goals last week, bringing the freshman’s season total to six.
  • Defensively, Belmont leads The Valley and ranks 13th in Division I in team goals against average (.556) and 17th in save percentage (.844). 
  • Bowling Green’s Enzo Gil is tied for the nation’s lead for total saves (50) this season while Bradley’s Drew Berry ranks second in The Valley and 18th in the country with 39 stops.
  • Belmont goalkeeper Grant Calvert leads the MVC and ranks in the Top 25 nationally in goals against average (.565) with the league’s best save percentage (.839).

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Andres Escudero, Evansville, Fr., Forward - San Sebastián de los Reyes, Spain (IES Joan Miro)

Evansville’s Andres Escudero carried the Purple Aces to a pair of victories last week, tallying seven shots and a trio of goals. With the Aces trailing Butler, 1-0, in the 76th minute on Tuesday, Escudero notched two goals in six minutes to help Evansville secure the comeback win. With his pair of goals, he became the first freshman in the country with a brace this season. He added one more goal to his weekly stat line in the Conference-opening win over Bowling Green, scoring his sixth on the year to tie the national lead for goals scored by a rookie. Escudero has tallied six goals in the last five matches.
 
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Drew Berry, Bradley, Sr., Goalkeeper - Westminster, Mass. (Oakmont Regional HS)

Bradley’s Drew Berry helped the Braves earn their first Conference point of the season on Saturday, limiting UIC’s high-scoring offense to just one goal while making six stops. The senior keeper faced a Valley-high 14 shots in the opener, from a team that has averaged over 20 shots per match this season, holding the Flames to two goals below their season average coming into the match. He opened the week with four saves against Green Bay, finishing the week with 10 total stops. Berry ranks second in The Valley in total saves and saves per game this season while jumping into the Top 10 all-time at Bradley in save percentage, goals against average and total saves.
