Winning Ways -- Belmont is the only NCAA Division I institution in America whose men’s and women’s basketball programs have won 20 or more games in 10 consecutive seasons. Belmont head coach Casey Alexander has posted nine consecutive 20-win seasons himself (dating back to his tenure at Lipscomb) - one of only six active NCAA Division I head coaches, joining Dana Altman, Mark Few, Greg McDermott, Kelvin Sampson and Bill Self.

Drake’s Lengthy Streak Ends -- The Bulldogs had a streak of winning eight straight home openers (dating back to 2017) come to an end with an OT home loss to Robert Morris. The loss also halted Drake’s streak of 49 consecutive non-conference home victories. Senior transfer guard Jalen Quinn led a balanced scoring attack with career-high 20 points for the second straight game.

Panthers Start 2-0 -- UNI forced 20 turnovers in the season-opening win against CSUN. The last time UNI had forced 20+ turnovers against a DI opponent was 12/31/22 vs. Illinois State. In the Sunday win against South Dakota State, Trey Campbell played in his 100th career game (his 65th-consecutive start).Campbell is also now 71 points away from joining UNI’s 1,000 career point club.
Fine Frosh - Valpo freshman Rakim Chaney is off to a strong start to his collegiate career, averaging a team-high 13.5 points per game through the first week of the season. Chaney’s 15 points at No. 9 Kentucky were the most by a Valpo freshman against a top-10 opponent since Samuel Haanpaa’s 18 on Dec. 2, 2006 at No. 3 Ohio State. Chaney’s 15-point, five-assist game at Kentucky was just the second instance of a Valpo rookie recording 15 or more points and five or more assists against any opponent since 2014. (Other: All Wright, 18p-5a on Jan. 18 of last season vs. UIC).
Roster Rebuilds -- Only three MVC teams returned more than half of their playing roster from last season -- of the league’s total 166 roster spots in 2025-26, 61.4 percent of the players are new to their programs.
Hemenway’s Career Day -- UE’s Alex Hemenway went a perfect 5-for-5 from outside to help the Evansville defeat Calumet College of St. Joseph in Evansville’s home opener. Hemenway was 8-of-10 from the floor on his way to a career-high 21 points. His previous scoring mark of 18 points came in against USC Upstate in his time at Clemson.
Century Club -- Southern Illinois erupted for 101 points in a 101-78 win over Kansas City. It marked the Salukis’ first triple-digit scoring performance since 2023 and just their third since 2020. Meanwhile, Murray State is 2-0 after a neutral site win vs. Omaha and a win Friday vs Mississippi Valley, 108-60. MSU’s 108 points was their top scoring game against an NCAA D-I team since MSU won at home against Tennessee State 114-100 in 2001. The Racers held MVSU to 19 field goals and forced MVSU into 23 turnovers. The Racers are at SMU on Tuesday and are looking for their first 3-0 start to a season as an MVC member (MSU last started a season with 3-straight wins in 2021-22).

Power Play -- UIC’s last three matchups with power-conference schools have all been road losses decided by 11 points or fewer -- 69-58 at Cincinnati in 2023, 83-74 at Northwestern last year, and Friday’s 76-73 margin at Oregon State. This was the Flames’ closest call against a power conference opponent since an 80-75 win at BIG EAST member DePaul 12/14/16.
It’s a Steal -- UIC’s 13 steals at Oregon State were the most its has recorded against a Division I opponent since Nov. 16, 2016, when it also had 13 thefts in an 86-78 win over UTSA at Credit Union 1 Arena. Ahmad Henderson’s career-high seven steals were the most by a UIC player since Jan. 9, 2013, when Daniel Barnes had eight steals in a 75-70 home loss to Valparaiso. His seven steals are tied for the fifth most by an MVC players in the last 30 seasons.

Nation’s 2nd Oldest -- Founded in 1907, the Missouri Valley Conference is the nation’s second-oldest Division I athletic conference (behind only the Big Ten). The MVC is celebrating its 119th season in 2025-26.
Four Postseason Teams in 25 -- The Missouri Valley Conference had four teams in postseason play in men’s basketball as Drake (NCAA), Bradley (NIT), UNI (NIT), and Illinois State (CBI) represented the MVC. MVC schools have combined for 12 wins in post-season play the past two seasons. The six postseason wins in 2024-25 matches the ninth-best total in league history.
13-4 in NCAA First Round -- Including Drake in 2025, MVC teams are 13-4 in their first game in the NCAA tourney dating back to 2012. The league has combined for 21 wins in the NCAA Tournament in the past 12 NCAA championships and has had multiple bids 16 times since 1994.
MVC Player of the Week
Jaquan Johnson, Bradley
G, 5-11, 195, So., Milwaukee, Wis. (Pius XI High)
Johnson has had a stellar start to his sophomore campaign, averaging 23.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game, all while shooting over 42% from three and 64% from the field. In the Braves’ matchup with St. Bonaventure, Johnson tied for the team lead in points (13) and rebounds (4). Just a few days later, he followed his solid opening performance with a career night, scoring a career-high 33 points against Central Michigan on 11-of-16 shooting from the field and a career high 3 makes from three-point range. He also added six rebounds (one shy of tying his career high), three assists and two steals, all in just 26 minutes.
MVC Newcomer of the Week
Ian Scott, Indiana State
F, 6-7, 220, Gr., Plainfield, Ind. (Plainfield High /Grace College)
Scott led the Sycamores in the week with an impressive 82.4% (14-for-17) shooting from the floor, including knocking down 2-of-3 threes and 7-of-9 from the floor. Scott also averaged 8.5 rebounds between the two games, recording 5 assists, 3 blocks, and 3 steals. Through the first week of play compared to the rest of the league, his numbers rank: first in field goal percentage, fourth in points per game, and second in rebounds per game. In the opener, Scott recorded a double-double of 24 points, 11 rebounds finishing 9-of-10 from the floor. He followed that up with a 20-point, 6-rebound performance in only 20 minutes on the court.
MVC Freshman of the Week
Ty’Reek Coleman, Illinois State
G, 6-2, 175, Fr., Aurora, Ill. (Waubonsie Valley High)
Scored 24 points against Cornell on Sunday and is one of just 10 freshmen in the NCAA this season with a game of 24 or more points. His 24 point game is the 21st-most in a game by an ISU freshman in program history, and the second-most in a home freshman debut, the most since Emon Washington scored 30 points against NCAA Division III Greenville on December 2020.
