We Meet Again
For the first time since 2009, two first-round MVC women’s soccer tournament matches will feature teams that played against one another in the regular-season finale. Belmont faces UNI after the teams played Sunday. And Drake and Murray State play again after playing one another in the final game of the season. From 2009-present, it’s happened eight times -- including the two matches this year. In the six previous occurrences (since 2008), the team that won the regular-season finale won the tournament meeting five of six times.

Fit to Be Tied
There were 15 ties in league play this season. UNI’s six ties in MVC play (and seven overall), led the league. Belmont and Drake had six ties during the season, followed by Evansville and UIC -- both with five. UNI tied the league single-season record (7), established by Evansville in 2021. In the last three seasons the league has set a new standard for tied matches (6-2020; 8-2021; 15-2022).

Fit to Be Tied
There were two ties in the regular-season standings. UIC (No. 3 Seed) and Southern Illinois (No. 4 Seed) each had a 5-2-3 record and 18 points. UIC earned the No. 3 seed since the Flames beat SIU in head-to-head competition (winning 1-0 on Sunday, Oct. 23). UNI (2-2-6) and Belmont (3-4-3) both finished with 12 points and tied one another during the regular season. UNI earned the higher seed (No. 6) as the Panthers had a better cumulative record against teams above them in the standings. (UNI went 0-2-3 against teams 1-5; while Belmont was 0-4-1 against those same group of teams.)
SIU -- Earning a Bye
The Salukis will have a first round bye, as Thursday’s neutral contest in Carbondale will be between fifth seeded Drake and eighth seeded Murray State. Southern Illinois has played well against its two potential opponents, earning a 2-2 draw against the Bulldogs on Sept. 18 and a 1-0 win versus the Racers on Oct. 13. Both of SIU’s goals against Drake came in the final 10 minutes with the Salukis trailing 2-0, and Lara Barbieri scored the game-winner against Murray State in the 85th minute.
UIC -- Valley Tournament Debut
UIC qualified for the Valley tournament as the #3 seed, earning a bye. It will host UNI or Belmont on Sunday, marking the program’s first home conference tournament match.
SIU -- Salukis Qualify
Southern Illinois will be competing in its first-ever postseason tournament after securing the fourth seed in the Valley. After winning a total of five games in their first three seasons, the Salukis have won eight games this year, and hold a conference record of 5-2-3. They will begin the playoffs at home in Carbondale, where they have a record of 4-2-3 this year.
VALPO -- Champs
This year marks the fourth time in program history Valpo has won a conference regular season title. Valpo previously won Mid-Continent Conference regular season crowns in back-to-back seasons in 2005 and 2006, and posted a perfect record to claim the 2014 Horizon League regular season title.
UNI -- 1-3 as a 6 Seed
For the third season in a row, UNI will participate in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament for postseason play. The Panthers enter the tournament as the sixth seed for the fifth time in program history. UNI has a record of 1-3 in the MVC Tournament as a six seed with their lone win coming in 2015 against Missouri State. Overall, UN is 5-12-2 in the tourney. Both ties were games that UNI would eventually drop in penalty kicks with the Panthers last tournament win coming in 2017 against Illinois State.
MUR -- Offensive Impact
The Murray State Racers made an offensive impact in their inaugural season in the Valley while leading the league in assists (23) and tying with Valparaiso for the league-high in goals scored (22). The Racers have 11 players that have recorded a goal this season while nine players have recorded an assist.
DU -- History in the Tourney
Since joining MVC women’s soccer in 2002, Drake is 10-16-3 in the MVC Tournament having won the MVC Tournament Championship in 2006. Drake defeated UNI in OT in the quarterfinals of last year’s tourney before falling to Loyola in the semis.
MOST -- Star Freshman
Hailey Chambliss (Fr., F/M, Eureka, Mo.) leads the Missouri State Bears in goals (6) and points (14). In the Missouri Valley Conference, she has the second most goals and is tied for the most points.
BEL .. In Post-Season Play
The Bruins have appeared in six conference tournaments since Head Coach Heather Henson took over the program in 2011. The Bruins most recently finished third in the OVC. Coach Henson took her team to the NCAA Tournament in 2019 after winning the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. The senior class was a part of that championship team and are looking for the same result in the Missouri Valley.
VU .. Strong MVC Campaign
Valpo claimed the MVC regular season crown with strong play on both sides of the ball, as the Beacons outscored their opposition 19-5 in their 10 Valley matches. Valpo paced all conference schools in both goals scored and goals against in conference play. The Beacons gave up one goal or fewer in all 10 of their MVC fixtures. Offensively, Sunday’s win was the team’s fourth multi-goal win in conference play — the program’s most since winning four Horizon League matches by two or more goals in 2009.
UIC .. Back in the Postseason
The Flames are in a conference tournament for the third time in the last four seasons, and the fourth time in program history. Their best finish was a championship match appearance in 2019. UIC’s all-time conference tournament record is 1-3.
MOST .. Bear Bits
MoState more than tripled its conference wins (seven) from last year’s total (two). MoState has a shutout percentage of .556, good for 31st highest in the nation.
SIU .. Defense Leads Salukis
Only Belmont had a stronger defense during the regular season than Southern Illinois. The Salukis’ 0.94 goals-against average was the second best number in the conference. In its last four games, SIU has allowed just four goals with three shutouts during that span. The most goals the Salukis conceded in those seven games was just one, which happened on four occasions.
MUR .. Young Leads MVC
Murray State’s Saraya Young led the MVC in assists despite this being her first season playing primarily as a forward. The senior earned all-conference honors as a defender twice in her career but has made a stunning transition to the frontline with seven assists and three goals in her lone season as a forward.
DU .. Rematch with Murray
After defeating Murray State 1-0 on Senior Day in the regular season finale, the Bulldogs will turn right around to face the Racers again in the first round of the MVC Tournament
UNI .. Been a While
The last time UNI and tournament opponent Belmont were in postseason play together was over 20 years ago in 2000. Both UNI and Belmont made the postseason in 2000 but did not play against one another as each team lost in the first round.
VU .. Getting to Host
Valpo’s two regular season titles in the Mid-Con days came when the conference had predetermined sites for its tournament final rounds, meaning that this year marks just the second time Valpo will host the decisive rounds of a league tournament. When Valpo did so in 2014, it defeated Green Bay (2-0) and Detroit (1-0) to win the Horizon League tournament title and advance to the NCAAs.
MUR .. Hat Trick
Murray State freshman Sydney Etter recorded the lone hat trick in the MVC this season in the Racers 7-3 win over Illinois State. The Mascoutah, Illinois native recorded four goals this season to lead the Racers in goals along with senior, Lauren Payne.
