2021 Women's Soccer Tournament Match 1 - Drake 3, UNI 2

With a golden goal from junior Rachel Panther in the 100th minute, the Drake University women's soccer team advances to the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Tournament after defeating UNI, 3-2, for the second time in four days.

The wind and cold presented a challenge for both teams throughout the match.

"That was a very exciting game, but also exhausting as the field was soft and the wind was brutal. We scored three very good goals," said head coach Lindsey Horner. "It was rather frustrating twice to let them back in the game on set pieces, but what I'm most proud of was our response to conceding the goals, and adjusting to what felt like a very different game than when we hosted UNI on Thursday. We found a way to get the momentum back after they scored, and didn't let one error become two."

Drake opened scoring in the quarterfinal match, when senior Libby Helverson scored in the 13th minute for the Bulldogs to take the early lead.

The Panthers attempted to craft numerous scoring opportunities, but were stopped by Drake keeper Kelsie Stone and the Bulldogs back line.

Stone ended the match with 11 saves after facing 17 shots.

UNI out-shot Drake in the first half 9-1. The Panthers managed to tie the match in the 33rd minute when Johnnie Hill found Sophia Meier in the box. Meier then scored to tie that match 1-1.

In the 77th minute, Rachel Panther found herself in the box attempting to get past a number of purple jerseys. She found freshman Makenna Shepard in the lower left of the box, who tripped up a defender and UNI keeper Chloe Russo, to find the lower right side of the net.

Shepard's goal was her second in four days and third this season.

Six minutes after the Bulldogs took back the lead, UNI received a corner kick. Allison Whitaker received the ball in the box and headed it into the net to tie the match once again, 2-2.

Neither team managed to score before the clock hit 90, sending the match into overtime.

With 38 seconds left in overtime, sophomore Courtney Hinrichs kicked the ball up the pitch, intending to pass to Emma Nagel. The ball went over Nagel's head and landed in front of Rachel Panther who scored the golden goal.

Panther's goal was her second in nine days and third this season.

Horner said, "The team is thrilled to be heading to Chicago as one of the last four teams still playing. Playing host Loyola is a challenge, but we are excited by the opportunity that Friday presents!"

The Bulldogs head to Chicago to take on regular season MVC champions, Loyola, on Friday Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. in the MVC tournament semifinals.
