2008 MVC Indoor Track & Field

UNI claimed the men's and women's championship at the 2008 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  The men's championship was the ninth-straight and set a new MVC record.

60m Hurdles
 
UNI’s Olimpia Nowak edged out teammate Dani Stipe for the best time in the 60m hurdles, the first event of the championship and of the indoor pentathlon.  Nowak clocked in at 8.76 seconds, clipping Stipe by 0.02 in the time section finals.

Heptathlon 60m

 
Wichita State’s Chris Dickman ran 7-flat in the heptathlon 60m, registering the top time just ahead of teammate Krzysztof Slupkowski (7.03) to grab the early lead in the event.  UNI’s Mat Clark (7.11) was third.

Rachel VanderHolt of UNI cleared 1.74m (5-8.50) to win the high  jump in the pentathlon, leading the way for the Panthers to claim the top three spots in the event.  Dani Stipe (1.68m) and Olimpia Nowak (1.68m) took second and third, respectively.

UNI’s Mat Clark leapt into the lead after two events in the men’s heptathlon, with a 7.17m (23-06.25) long jump, outdistancing Wichita State’s Justin Taylor by an inch and a half.  WSU’s Chris Dickman was the only other athlete over the seven meter mark (7.01).

Shot Put 
 
Raven Cepeda of UNI, the nation’s top scorer in the pentathlon this season, won the men’s shot put with a throw of 14.58m (47-10.00) and was the only competitor of the 14-meter mark, as he claimed his first individual title in the event.  Krzysztof Slupkowski of Wichita State was the runner-up with a toss of 13.99m (45-10.75).

Gwen Berry of Southern Illinois and Olimpia Nowak of UNI each hit the 12.46m (40-10.50) mark in the shot put to tie for the event win.  Frannie Epps of Illinois State took third with her 11.96m (39-03.00) toss.

UNI swept the top three spots in the pentathlon long jump as Dani Stipe (5.87m, 19-03.25) and Olimpa Nowak (5.84m, 19-02.00) posted their fourth personal best in as many events.  Alyssa Fischer took third with a 5.66m leap.

Justin Taylor of Wichita State and Mat Clark of UNI each cleared 1.99m (6-6.25) in the men’s high jump portion of the heptathlon.  Krzysztof Slupkowski took third, clearing 1.96m (6-5.00)

Dani Stipe of UNI cruised to the 800m win in the women’s pentathlon with a time of 2:19.33.  The run was Stipe’s fifth personal best of the event.  Kayla Stout of Wichita State was second and Amanda Jones of IndianaState was third.

Pentathlon - Final  UNI’s Olimpia Nowak set personal bests in all five events and set a new MVC Championship meet record with 4,016 points, meeting the NCAA provisional standard and moving into ninth place on the NCAA descending order list, unofficially.  Nowak led UNI to placements in four of the top five positions, earning 28 team points in the event.

Women’s Weight Throw
 
Brittany Riley won her third MVC 20-pound weight throw title with a meet-record toss of 24.14m (79-02.50).  The winning throw was her fourth of the season to surpass the 24m mark – the only American this year to reach that distance. Rachel Jansen of UNI was the runner-up at 19.42m, a school record.  Kelsey Hanley of Indiana State took third place with a 17.59m (57-05.75).

Men’s Weight Throw
 
Joe Mueller and Brenton Siemons made it a one-two finish for Southern Illinois in the men’s weight throw, each clearing 19m – the only two throwers in the competition to clear that mark – in the finals.  Mueller successfully defended his title with a 20.03m effort, the best throw in the conference this season and surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.
Women's Long Jump  Southern Illinois’ Bianca Stuart became the fourth, three-time MVC women’s long jump champion with a finals leap of 6.28m (20-07.25) to top the field by nearly a foot.  Lauren Martin of Indiana State was the runner up at 6.02m (19-09.00) and Olimpia Nowak, the women’s pentathlon champion, was third with a 5.84m effort.
Men's Long Jump  Drake's Marcus Gaines lept a conference-best 7.70m (25-03.25).  The leap is tied for the 14th-best in the nation entering the meet and met the NCAA provisional standard.  UNI's Alvin Cole (7.13m) and Southern Illinois' Trenton McKinney (7.10m) finished second and third, respectively. 
Men's Pole Vault  Raven Cepeda of UNI won the fourth-consecutive pole vault championship for the Panthers, clearing an MVC-best 5.11m (16-09.25) to win the event over teammate Mike Beese (4.96m).  Phil Hanson made it a 1-2-3 sweep for UNI and he also cleared 4.96m. 
Women’s 5000m  It was a repeat of the top two from the cross country championship in the women’s 5000m, as Kellyn Johnson of Wichita State was the class of the field, while UNI’s Traci Hawley took runner-up honors.  Johnson’s 17:06.99 is the fastest time in the Valley this season.
Men's 5000m  Jeff Schirmer surged past Drake’s Andrew Haigh at the final lap bell and took the men’s 5000m in 14:46.22.  Haigh captured second for the Bulldogs, while Illinois State’s Scott Krapf and Matt Mroczynski grabbed third and fourth, respectively.

Women's DMR   Missouri State was spectacular in setting a new MVC championship record in the women's distance medley relay, clocking in at 11:43.16 with a team of Emily Fletcher, Yaneika Malcolm, Leander Ernest and Asher Kyger.  The previous record was set by Southern Illinois in 2001 (11:44.48)
Men's DMR  UNI won its third-straight MVC title in the men's DMR, running a 9:59.93 and overtaking Indiana State on the bell lap for a dramatic win.  Dorian Ulrey chased down John Lambertus with a 4:07.54, 1600m split.

Heptathlon
60m Hurdles 
Raven Cepeda posted an 8.21 in the 60m hurdles in the fifth event in the men's heptathlon, earning 930 points and jumping into the overall lead in the event with 3995 points.  Cooper Hanning of Wichita State clocked an 8.40 and WSU's Krzysztof Slupkowski an 8.45.

Heptathlon 
Pole Vault 
Raven Cepeda of UNI cleared 5.14m (16-10.25), topping his individual pole vault height from Saturday and setting a new Valley best, while earning 954 points towards his cause in the men's heptathlon.  Indiana State's Anthony Bertoli was second, over the bar at 4.94m (16-02.50). 
Heptathlon 1000m  Chris Dickman of Wichita State overtook UNI's Mat Clark on the final lap to win the 1000m in the heptathlon with a time of 2:37.04.  Clark was just behind at 2:37.96 and Indiana State's Anthony Bertoli was third in 2:40.75.  
Heptathlon - Final   UNI's Raven Cepeda won his fourth MVC heptathlon final with a score of 5694, a new championship record.  Mat Clark of UNI was the runner-up with 5608 and Wichita State's Krzysztof Slupkowski was third with 5539.  Slupkowski, along with teammate Chris Dickman (5511) posted NCAA provisional scores. 
Women's Triple Jump  Lauren Martin of Indiana State was an inch and a half better than defending champion Erika Kovesi of Wichita State, winning the triple jump with a distance of 40-10.50.  Kovesi reached 40-09.00 and Mikeya Nicholson of Southern Illinois took third with 40-00.75.
Women's Shot Put  Rachel Jansen of UNI claimed her third MVC shot put title with a toss of 16.67m (54-08.25), easily outdistancing the field.  Southern Illinois' Rickael Roach (14.18m) and Sarah Harms of UNI (14.12) round out the top three. 
Men's High Jump  UNI's Julian Morris cleared 2.21m (7-03.00) to set the best Valley height of the season and improve updo his provisional qualifying mark.  His teammate, Ehi Oamen claimed second (2.18m, 7-01.75) and Alex Straughn of Illinois State was third (2.07m) 
Women's Mile  Missouri State's Asher Kyger overtook Wichita State's Kellyn Johnson on the fourth turn and had enough to hold off the Shockers' Olivia Martinez, to win the women's mile in 4:54.77.  The win ended a three-year Wichita State hold on the event. 
Men's Mile  UNI's Dorian Ulrey out-kicked Wichita State's Girts Azis on the bell lap of the men's mile to take the title in 4:14.11.  Azis clocked in a 4:14.97. Sean Bowman of Indiana State was third in 4:17.40  
Women's 60m Hurdles - Final  Wichita State's Jennifer Snyder won her second-straight MVC championship in the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.54.  Terri Counts of Southern Illinois (8.66) and Megan Thompson of Illinois State (8.75) round out the top three. 
Men's 60m Hurdles - Final  Jarrel Anderson of UNI was a repeat winner in the men's 60m hurdles, clocking a 7.90. Luther Wilson of Wichita State ran 8.17 and Raven Cepeda an 8.19 to round out the top three.
Women's 400m - Final  Erica Moore of Indiana State ran a 55.35 in the finals of the women's 400m to claim the MVC crown over Lauren Carruthers of UNI and Jennifer Snyder of Wichita State.   
Men's 400m - Final  Sammy Biggs of Southern Illinois edged Sean Wright of Indiana State, 47.73 to 47.95, in the men's 400m final.  Ryan Grenko of UNI was third in 48.04.
Women's 60m - Final  Illinois State's Devon Williams won her third-consecutive indoor championship in the 60m, running a meet record 7.41 seconds for the title.  Andrea Norris of Southern Illinois was second (7.54) and Jeanne Middleton of Indiana State was third (7.60). 
Men's 60m - Final  Jeramie Gray of Indiana State claimed his second MVC men's 60m crown in as many seasons will a winning time of 6.78.  Stevie Warren of Southern Illinois was second (6.90) and Augustine Agyei of Drake was third in 6.92. 
Women's 800m - Final Leander Ernest of Missouri State took the women's 800m crown in 2:12.88, topping UNI's Jamie Hutchinson (2:14.14) and Adriane Wunderlich of Indiana State (2:14.30).
Men's 800m - Final Tyler Mulder of UNI ran a 1:49.90 and topped the field by nearly two seconds in the men's 800m, leading start to finish.  Kurt Heimann of Indiana State (1:51.86) was second, followed by Wichita State's Girts Azis (1:52.06).
Women's High Jump  UNI's Crystal Hanson cleared the bar at 1.73m (5-08.00) to take the individual championship over Drake's Tyse Samani and Illinois State's Amanda Albrecht (both 1.68)
Men's Shot Put Brenton Siemons of Southern Illinois threw the shot 17.93m (58-10.00) to win the shot by more than four feet over teammates Ryan Shumaker and Thomas Smith. 
Men's Triple Jump  Alex Straughn of Illinois State won the meet with a leap of 15.21m (49-11.00).  Josh Crawford of Wichita State was second (14.72m) and Geoffry Daniel of Southern Illinois was third (14.70m). 
Women's 200m - Final  Devon Williams of Illinois State won her second-straight women's 200m and secured her second 60-200m double, clocking a 24.31 in the final.  Southern Illinois Andrea Norris was second in 24.62 and UNI's Meredith Kosmacek-Simon was third in 24.95. 
Men's 200m - Final  21.64 was the winning time in the men's 200 by Southern Illinois Brandon Deloney, clipping UNI's Terrance Reid (21.70) and Stevie Warren of Southern Illinois (21.95). 
Women's 3000m - Final   Traci Hawley of UNI outran the pack by nearly three seconds in the women's 3000m to win in 9:50.70.  Kelly Johnson of Wichita State was second in 9:53.57 and Suzy Turner of Illinois State was third in 9:56.53.
Men's 3000m - Final  Jeff Schirmer of Southern Illinois, the 2007 cross country champion, took the title with a final lap surge past the field to finish in 8:25.18, ahead of Illinois State's Scott Krapf (8:26.26) and Indiana State's Sean Bowman (8:26.45) 
Women's 4x400   Indiana State's Erica Moore closed strong as the Sycamores claimed the women's 4x400 relay in a time of 3:44.83. UNI (3:46.16) edged Missouri State (3:46.69) for second.
Men's 4x400  UNI's quartet of Terrance Reid, Ryan Grenko, Cory Goos and Tyler Mulder finished just off the MVC meet record in the 4x400 relay, win the race in 3:12.81.
