It was a tale of two styles on the men’s side and a good day to be an ISU on the women’s side. Illinois State’s men became the third team in the 16-year history of the event to sweep the men’s doubles titles, joining Indiana State teams from 2000 and 2002. In singles, Drake was the story, claiming titles in six flights, becoming the sixth team to claim at least five singles titles. In the women’s draw, Indiana State stole the show, winning titles in six of the seven flights they entered, while Illinois State claimed the remaining three titles.

Matches were played at the Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center because of inclement weather in the Omaha area.

Drake equaled their school record for singles titles with six, tying the mark of the 1983 team.

The Bulldogs were victorious in each of the seven singles flights, save No. 3 singles where Southern Illinois Hugo Vidal took the title.

At No. 1 singles, Maor Zirkin won his third MVC singles title and his first in the top flight as he knocked off Indiana State’s Rishi Behl, 6-0, 6-4, behind a solid return of serve and big service games.

Dalibor Pavic became the sixth player to ever win three MVC titles, regardless of flight, adding this year’s No. 2 win to his previous championships at No. 3 singles in 2006 and 2007. Pavic used heavy ground strokes and big service to topple Illinois State’s Nuno Jacinto, 6-1, 6-3.

Southern Illinois’ Hugo Vidal was the only non-Bulldog to take home a singles plaque. The Frenchman topped Illinois State’s Xavier Riart-Ferrer, 6-1, 6-1, in an impressive display at No. 3 singles. The MVC individual title is the first in SIU history.

Ivan Mendoza continued the Drake onslaught at No. 4 singles, getting the best of Southern Illinois Breno Salvany, 6-0, 6-2, in the final.

Halvar Dil was the winner in the only championship match decided in three sets as he took down Illinois State’s Daniel Tobar, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 5 singles, in a reversal of last season’s No. 7 singles tilt.

Ricardo Lau took down the fourth Redbird the Bulldogs would defeat in the final, earning a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Michael Hobson at the No. 6 flight.

Number seven singles featured an all-Drake final, with Konrad Kamazelich defeating Scott Buchowski, 6-2, 6-1, to secure the sixth title for DU.

Doubles was a different story as Illinois State became the third team ever to win all three positions at the same championship.

The biggest of the three wins came off the rackets of Luka Marinkovic and Daniel Tobar, as they knocked off Drake’s Maor Zirkin and Dalibor Pavic, the nation’s No. 35 team, 8-6.

The Redbirds’ Xavier Riart-Ferrer and Nuno Jacinto made it two-for-two over Drake in doubles play with an 8-6 win of their own at the No. 2 slot.

Oscar Beich and Michael Hobson were 8-4 winners over Bradley’s Michel Macara and Richard Robertson.

Jennifer Migan made history on the women’s side, but it wasn’t easy as she was pushed by Wichita State’s Torrie Browning in the final at No. 1 singles.

Migan won her third top-flight singles championship, joined MVC greats Sandy Sadler of Wichita State and Liina Suurvarik of Illinois State as the only three-time No. 1 singles champions since the beginning of the championship in 1983.

Migan wasn’t the only Indiana State player enjoying success, as Sycamores claimed crowns in all but one flight in which they entered.

Indiana State’s Sarah Meghoufel enjoyed her first taste of Missouri Valley Conference action as she took the No. 2 singles title with a three-set win over Illinois State’s Katri Miller, 6-7, 7-6, 6-7.

Illinois State Julia Zubkova’s three-setter over Joanne Schickerling at No. 3 singles prevented the Sycamores an unbeaten weekend. Set scores were 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (5).

Fadzai Masiyazi was the only Indiana State player to sweep her championship match, breezing by Southern Illinois Martina Ce, 6-1, 6-1, for the third Indiana State title.

Marie Caujolle claimed her second MVC individual title (No. 2 singles, 2004), at No. 5 singles with a three-set win over UNI’s Carolina Hannes, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Illinois State’s Tanja Hrovatic took home the No. 6 flight singles victory with a win over Diana Mendez of UNI by identical set scores of 6-2, 6-2.

Doubles contests were more of the same as Indiana State was the victor in the top-two flights, while Illinois State grabbed the other championship.

Jennifer Migan was again part of an historic win, this time with teammate Joanne Schickerling. The Indiana State duo’s 8-3 win over UNI’s Sampada Kanade and Taynara Moraes was the third win for the tandem, becoming the second team to win three No. 1 doubles tournaments, joining Illinois State’s Liina Suurvarik and Alesia Mikalayeva.

Meghoufel and Masiyazi claimed the No.2 doubles flight with an 8-4 win over Illinois State’s Zubkova and Katie O’Riley.

Illinois State’s third titles came at No. 3 doubles as Hrovatic and Carolyne Parent were 8-3 winner over UNI’s Meghana Paritala and Diana Mendez.
