2010 MVC Women's Soccer

Erin Gunther converted a penalty kick at 97:51 and the Bluejays beat Missouri State, 2-1, in the title match of the State Farm MVC Tournament.  Lauren Cingoranelli of Creighton was named tournament MVP after scoring once with three assists in the Bluejays' two wins.  Creighton now has five MVC Tournament crowns (2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2010).
TOURNAMENT INFO -- The 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women's Soccer Championship is being played at Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Neb.   Creighton is hosting the championship.  Illinois State is the defending tournament champion.
NCAA TOURNAMENT -- The winner of the championship earns the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.  Pairings for the NCAA Championship (64 teams) will be announced Monday, Nov. 8.  The Division I women’s soccer selection show will air approximately at 3:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU.

TITLE TALK -- With this year’s regular-season title, the Bluejays have two MVC regular-season crowns (2002, 2010), and Creighton has won the tournament crown four times (2002, 2004, 2005, 2007).  This year’s conference tournament will be played in Omaha, and the Bluejays were the last MVC team to win the title on their home field (2005).  Evansville is the only other host to win an MVC women’s crown (1996, 1998).  Notably, the event was hosted at a neutral site for four seasons (2000-04).  Illinois State (7) and Evansville (6) own the most regular-season championships (outright or shared).  Drake has four.

BIRDS SNAPPED-- Illinois State had won or shared the league’s regular-season title in each of the past three seasons.  Evansville (five-straight from 1996-2000) and Drake (four in a row from 2003-06) also have had lengthy regular-season title runs.

BEARS SECOND -- Missouri State’s highest-ever regular-season finish was last year (2nd place), and the Bears matched that with their 13-point second-place finish this year.

BEST EVER -- The Missouri Valley Conference has a non-conference record of 38-32-10 (.538), and only post-season play remains.  The league’s previous best two non-conference seasons were in 2001 (45-41-2, .522) and 2005 (40-38-12, .511).

MVC TV and "MVC LIVE" -- On Sunday, Nov. 7, Valley TV cameras will showcase Father Michael Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska, for the 2 p.m. Central telecast.  Sean Wheelock and Dave Dir will call the title match. Both semifinals of the 2010 State Farm MVC Women’s Soccer Championship on Friday, Nov. 5, will also be video streamed on MVC Live – the Missouri Valley Conference’s online webcast platform.  Wheelock and Dir will call the play, with the semifinals kicking off at 3:30 and 6 p.m. Central, respectively.  For more information, please visit the league’s web site www.mvc-sports.com.
