2008 MVC Outdoor Track & Field

UNI became the first team to sweep the men’s and women’s title in both the indoor and outdoor championships as they topped the field in Carbondale, Ill., at the 2008 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship. The Panthers outdistanced Wichita State, 204-180.50, on the men’s side for their second-straight outdoor team title and snuck by host Southern Illinois, 172.50 to 168, on the women’s side. The 2008 meet marks the 98th outdoor track & field championship sponsored by the Missouri Valley Conference, the most contested championship in the conference and second-most contested track & field championship in the nation (Big Ten, 108). Northern Iowa's men and Wichita State's women were the team champions.

Event Start Recap
Decathlon: 100m 12 p.m. Wichita State’s Krzysztof Slupkowski (10.63) and Chris Dickman (10.71) posted the top two times in the opening event of the men’s decathlon to take the early lead. UNI’s Mat Clark (10.75) and Raven Cepeda (10.85) were third and fourth, respectively.
Decathlon: Long Jump Mat Clark of UNI was the class of the decathlon long jump field, winning the event with a leap of 7.25m, ahead of a quartet of Wichita State athletes.
Decathlon: Shot Put UNI’s Raven Cepeda won the shot put in the men’s decathlon by 1.48m with his heave of 14.68m to earn 770 points.
Decathlon: High Jump Mat Clark of UNI and Justin Taylor of Wichita State each cleared 1.98m (6-6.00) to earn 785 points in the high jump of the men’s decathlon. Anthony Bertoli of Indiana State and Raven Cepeda each cleared 1.92m.
Decathlon: 400m Chris Dickman of Wichita State was the class of the 400m field in the men’s decathlon, taking the top honors and 925 points with a time of 47.68, more than a second better than UNI’s Mat Clark (48.77).
Heptathlon: 100 Hurdles 12: 30 p.m. Olimpia Nowak lead the UNI contingent to a sweep of the top four places in the opening event of the women’s heptathlon, clocking in with a 14.07 in the 100m hurdles.
Heptathlon: High Jump UNI’s Rachel VanderHolt and Dani Stipe took the top two spots in the high jump of the women’s heptathlon, with jumps of 1.69,m and 1.66m, respectively.
Heptathlon: Shot Put Olimpia Nowak of UNI out-threw Indiana State’s Dana Sander by 1.07m to take top points in the shot put of the women’s heptathlon.
Heptathlon: 200m UNI athletes took the top three spots in the 200m dash in the women’s heptathlon, led by Dani Stipe’s 24.59. Olimpia Nowak and Alyssa Fischer rounded out the top three.
Hammer Throw - Women's 12 p.m. Southern Illinois’ Brittany Riley won her third MVC hammer throw title in as many seasons with a toss of 66.59m (218-06), the fourth-best throw on the national best list this season. SIU took three of the top four spots in the event. UNI’s Rachel Jansen was second.
Hammer Throw - Men's 2 p.m. Southern Illinois’ Brenton Siemons won his second MVC outdoor title, adding a hammer throw championship to his shot put title from a season ago. Siemons was 5.44m beyond his closest competitor with his 62.68 effort.
Javelin - Women's 4 p.m. Erica Evans of Wichita State repeated as champion, clipping Frannie Epps of Illinois State in the women’s javelin, posting a 43.94m throw to Epps’ 43.02 heave.
Javelin - Men's 6 p.m. Kyle Becker of Wichita State took the crown over UNI’s Marcin Kazubowski in the men’s javelin throw. Becker’s win is his second-consecutive at the MVC outdoor championship.
10,000m - Women's 7 p.m. UNI’s Traci Hawley broke away from the field with two laps to go and cruised to the women’s 10000m title in 35:16.68 to set a new meet record.
10,000m - Men's 7:45 p.m. Jeff Schirmer of Southern Illinois ran away from Illinois State’s Scott Krapf on the bell lap to win comfortably in the men’s 10000m race in 30:07:50.
Saturday, May 17
Decathlon: 110 Hurdles 11 a.m. Raven Cepeda of UNI picked up an additional 921 points in the decathlon with a 14.42 effort in the 110m hurdles. Wichita State’s Krzysztof Slupkowski clocked in at 14.88, the only other competitor to break 15 seconds.
Decathlon: Discus Raven Cepeda continued to make his move in the decathlon, winning the discus throw with a toss of 41.71m to earn 699 points towards his total.
Decathlon: Pole Vault Raven Cepeda of UNI collected 926 points in the pole vault portion of the decathlon, clearing the bar at 5.05m (16-06.75) to take top honors over Wichita State’s Chris Dickman (4.85m, 15-11.00).
Decathlon: Javelin Raven Cepeda continued his strong second day in the men’s decathlon, winning the javelin with a throw of 52.70m (172-11), topping Wichita State’s Justin Taylor, the only other competitor to top the 50-meter mark.
Decathlon: 1,500m Anthony Bertoli of Indiana State ran 4:24.06 in the decathlon 1500m, 13 seconds better than Mat Clark of UNI, and earned 784 points.
Decathlon: Final Raven Cepeda of UNI won his third-consecutive MVC decathlon title with 7,641 points, the eighth-best score on the national descending list this season. Mat Clark of UNI made it a 1-2 finish for the Panthers ahead of three Wichita State athletes.
Heptathlon: Long Jump 12 p.m. Dani Stipe of UNI was first with a long jump of 6.05m to earn 865 points in the heptathlon long jump. She was followed by teammates Olimpia Nowak (5.72m) and Alyssa Fischer (5.37m).
Heptathlon: Javelin Dani Stipe added 680 points to her heptathlon total with a 40.66m toss in the javelin throw, four meters better than the field.
Heptathlon: 800m Dani Stipe won the 800m in the heptathlon in 2:22.36, her fourth event win of the competition, to earn 792 points. Dana Sander of Indiana State picked up 769 points for her second-place effort of 2:24.06.
Heptathlon: Final Dani Stipe of UNI met the NCAA automatic qualifying standard, scoring 5,550 points to win her first MVC championship in the heptathlon and lead the Panthers to a sweep of the top four spots and claim 29 team points in the event.
Shot Put - Women's 3:30 p.m. Rachel Jansen of UNI won her second-straight MVC title in meet record fashion, tossing the shot 17.30m (56-09.25), breaking her own championship record. The throw ranks sixth-best on the national list. Southern Illinois’ Brittany Riley was second (14.77m).
High Jump - Men's 3:30 p.m. UNI’s Ehi Oamen tied the seventh best high jump in the nation, clearing 2.20m (7-02.50), and winning his second-straight MVC high jump title. Julian Morris of UNI was the runner-up at 2.15m.
Long Jump - Women's 3:30 p.m. Southern Illinois’ Bianca Stuart set a new MVC meet record with her 6.27m (20-11.75) jump in the women’s long jump, her second title in as many seasons.
Shot Put - Men's 6 p.m. Brenton Siemons of Southern Illinois won his second-straight MVC shot put title and his second crown of the championship with an 18.10m (59-04.75) toss. Siemons was nearly five feet better than the field with the regional qualifying mark.
High Jump - Women's 6 p.m. UNI’s Crystal Hanson repeated as MVC champion in the women’s high jump with a clearance of 1.75m (5-08.75), ahead of Illinois State’s Amanda Albrecht (1.65m, 5-05.00)
Long Jump - Men's 6 p.m. Rozle Bucalo of UNI surpassed the regional standard with a leap of 7.46m (24-05.75) to claim the MVC championship. Wichita State’s Josh Crawford placed second (7.24m)

3,000m Steeplechase - Women's Final 7:35 p.m. Mica Land of Wichita State won her second MVC steeplechase title in as many season, posting a time of 10:25.96, leading a pack that posted three regional qualifying times.
3,000m Steeplechase - Men's Final 7:50 p.m. Indiana State took the top two positions in the day’s final race as Sean Bowman claimed the men’s steeplechase title in 9:08.17, followed by teammate Michael Disher (9:11.22).
Sunday, May 18
Pole Vault - Men's 12 p.m. Beau Morris of Wichita State claimed the men’s pole vault title with a clearance of 5.20m (17-00.75). UNI’s Phil Hanson also cleared the same bar.
Discus - Women's 12:30 p.m. Southern Illinois’ Brittany Riley won her second event of the competition, winning the women’s discus throw with a finals toss of 52.63m (172-08).
Triple Jump - Women's 12:30 p.m. Indiana State’s Lauren Martin won the women’s triple jump in regional qualifying fashion, posting a distance of 12.75m (41-10.00). Southern Illinois’ Mikeya Nicholson and Judeka Adams took second and third, respectively.
Discus - Men's 2:30 p.m. Indiana State’s Julius Smith marked a 51.01m (167-04) in the men’s discus to take the MVC title. He was the only thrower in the field to top the 50m mark.
Pole Vault - Women's 2:30 p.m. Kylie Hutson of Indiana State set a new MVC record and recorded the nation’s fourth-best pole vault, clearing 4.30m (14-01.25).
Triple Jump - Men's 2:30 p.m. Steve Daniel of Indiana State claimed the men’s triple jump with his 15.47m (50-09.25) leap to outdistance Illinois State’s Alex Straughn and Wichita State’s Josh Crawford.
4x100 - Women's 2 p.m. Illinois State won its fourth-straight MVC women’s 4x100 title in 46.19, holding off Southern Illinois (46.43).
4x100 - Men's 2:05 p.m. Southern Illinois’ Brandon Deloney was fastest down the straightaway as the Salukis claimed the 4x100 crown over a hard-charging Wichita State in a regional qualifying time of 40.48.
1,500m - Women's 2:10 p.m. Wichita State’s Mica Land overtook Bradley’s Katie Nowak in the final 200m to give the Shockers their fourth-straight women’s 1500m title in 4:31.60.
1,500m - Men's 2:20 p.m. UNI’s Dorian Ulrey took the men’s 1500m in 3:56.81, topping the two-time defending champion Girtz Azis of Wichita State (3:57.63) and Leyden Tolhurst of Drake (3:57.90).
100m Hurdles - Women's Final 2:30 p.m. Jennifer Snyder of Wichita State won second-straight 100m hurdle title in 13.82, meeting the regional standard and finishing just ahead of UNI’s Kara Yahn (13.91).
110m Hurdles - Men's Final 2:35 p.m. Jarrel Anderson led a 1-2 finish for the UNI men in the 110m hurdles, meeting the regional standard with a 14.20 second run. Raven Cepeda was second (14.37.
400m - Women's Final 2:40 p.m. Missouri State’s Leander Ernest was the only competitor to meet the regional qualifying standard, running 53.57 in the women’s 400m.
400m - Men's Final 2:45 p.m. Terrance Reid of UNI won his second MVC 400m title in 46.77, a regional qualifying mark. Sammy Biggs of Southern Illinois was second (47.05).
100m - Women's Final 2:50 p.m. Illinois State’s Devon Williams won her second 100m title with an 11.61 in the final. She won her first title in 2006.
100m - Men's Final 2:55 p.m. Southern Illinois’ Stevie Warren ran a 10.51 in the finals to stake his claim as the MVC’s fastest man in 2008, clipping Jeramie Gray and Gary Ogburn of Indiana State.
800m - Women's Final 3:15 p.m. Amy Bagge of UNI ran a 2:10.35 in the women’s 800m to take the top spot over Illinois State’s Michelle Brunk (2:11.25).
800m - Men's Final 3:20 p.m. UNI’s Tyler Mulder won his second-straight MVC outdoor 800m title (1:49.32), holding off a strong field of runners, three of which broke 1:50.
400m Hurdles - Women's Final 3:25 p.m. Wichita State’s Jennifer Snyder was the only hurdler to crack the one minute mark, clocking a 59.79 to win the women’s 400m hurdles.
400m Hurdles - Men's Final 3:30 p.m. Cory Goos of UNI was first in 52.35 and teammate Dennis Hammel ran 52.42 in the men’s 400m hurdles to take 18 team points and the top two spots.
200m - Women's Final 3:40 p.m. Illinois State’s Devon Williams pulled the double, winning the 200m after claiming the 100m title earlier in the day. Williams ran 23.90, a regional qualifying mark, in the final.
200m - Men's Final 3:45 p.m. Brandon Deloney of Southern Illinois ran 21.14 in the men’s 200 to edge teammate Stevie Warren for the top spot. Last year’s champion, Terrance Reid of UNI, was third (21.11).
5,000m - Women's Final 3:50 p.m. Mica Land of Wichita State won her third event of the championship with a dominating run in the women’s 5000m. Land took the win with a 17:12.01 in the final, 12 seconds better than the field.
5,000m - Men's Final 4:10 p.m. Southern Illinois’ Jeff Schirmer used another late kick to earn the win in the tight men’s 5000m race. Schirmer’s time of 15:13.12 was enough to top Indiana State’s Scott Keeney (15:15.77).
4x400 - Women's 4:30 p.m. Missouri State’s Leander Ernest ran away on the final leg of the women’s 4x400 relay as the Bears cruised to the title in 3:40.45.
4x400 - Men's 4:35 p.m. Southern Illinois’ quartet of Antoine Jennings, Stevie Warren, Brandon Deloney and Sammy Biggs won its second relay title in the men’s 4x400 after claiming the men’s 4x100 earlier in the afternoon. The Salukis’ winning time was a regionally qualifying 3:09.52.

2008 State Farm MVC Track & Field Preview and Pre-Championship Poll

With the 2008 State Farm MVC Outdoor Track & Field Championship set to begin on Friday, May 16, the coaches have tabbed UNI as the team to beat on the men’s and women’s side, unanimously selecting the Panthers to claim the men’s title and picking the women for the top spot on seven of eight ballots. While the favorites were clear, the race for the No. 2 position was tight in both polls, with Indiana State’s men edging Wichita State by one point on the men’s side and Indiana State and Southern Illinois deadlocked on the women’s side.

UNI’s Terrance Reid holds the MVC’s top time this season in the men’s 400m (46.70), putting him among the nation’s top 50...Sean Wright of Indiana State was the men’s MVC 400m in 2006 and is 0.15 seconds off the top Valley time in 2008...the top men’s 100m time is held by Indiana State’s Jeramie Gray (10.44), 0.27 seconds faster than the No. 2 spot...Southern Illinois’ men hold three of the top four times in the 200m...Indiana State’s Jeanne Middleton has run 0.13 faster than any other Valley sprinter in the women’s 100m...Devon Williams of Illinois State won the women’s 100m in 2006 and holds the MVC’s best 200m time this season by 0.48 seconds...
