The Belmont Bruins are back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference softball champions. Playing in Carbondale, Ill., at Charlotte West Stadium, the Bruins capped a dominant tournament run with an 8–1 victory over Murray State on Saturday, improving their overall record to 40–11 and claiming their second straight MVC tournament crown.
The championship game on Saturday showed Belmont at its most decisive. Murray State's Adison Hicks gave the Racers a brief 1–0 lead with a fourth-inning solo home run off starter Ellie Giles, but that advantage was short-lived. Belmont responded with a stunning six-run fourth inning that blew the game open, highlighted by a two-run single from Tallulah Eichholz, a two-run double from Emily Konz, and an RBI single from Rylee Spindler, who finished 3-for-4 with three RBI on the day. Maya Johnson came on in relief in the fifth and slammed the door, retiring all nine batters she faced with three more strikeouts to earn a save. The Bruins added two more runs in the fifth on another Spindler single, finishing with 11 hits and eight runs in what became a comfortable, commanding title-clinching performance.
The road to the championship game ran through Illinois State on Thursday, where Belmont again flexed its pitching and lineup depth in a 4–0 shutout win. Maya Johnson was electric from the start, striking out all 17 batters she faced while scattering just two hits over seven innings. The offense delivered just enough, getting a solo home run from Madison Dolecki in the fourth and adding two more in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Emily Konz and an RBI single from Rylee Spindler. The Redbirds, despite the efforts of starter Paige McLeod and reliever Hannah Meshnick, never found an answer for Johnson's dominant arsenal, as Belmont's pitching kept Illinois State off the board entirely.
Friday's semifinal rematch with Murray State offered a similar script. Johnson once again took the circle and was virtually untouchable, striking out 17 of the 23 Murray State batters she faced and allowing just two hits in a complete-game 4–0 shutout. Murray State's pitching staff — led by Bre Haislip, Raylee Roby, and Karlye Graber in relay — did its best to keep things close, but Belmont's offense broke through in the first and third innings. Madison Dolecki came through with a two-RBI single in the opener, and Nicole Hughes put the game away with a two-run home run in the third. Johnson's back-to-back complete-game shutouts set the stage for what was to come.
Fittingly, Johnson was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Belmont teammates Madison Dolecki, Nicole Hughes, and Rylee Spindler, all of whom were instrumental throughout the bracket. Murray State also earned multiple All-Tournament honors with Karlye Graber, Adison Hicks, and Allie Waldron recognized for their performances — and Raylee Roby earned the prestigious Elite 18 Award.
