Southern Illinois wins its first-ever MVC men’s golf championship, besting second-place Wichita State by 10 strokes (877-887) at the par-70, 6,940-yard layout at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.  The Salukis best previous finish at the MVC men’s golf championship was second place (most recently last year).  Wichita State had won eight-straight titles heading into this year, and have now finished 1st or 2nd in 20-straight years.

Illinois State’s Trent Wallace became just the fourth ISU student-athlete to win medalist honors, beating out WSU’s Grant Bennett by two strokes (211-213). The last ISU player to take home medalist honors was Kris Wildenradt in 2005.

MONDAY RECAP -- Southern Illinois' Peyton Wilhoit has a one-shot lead at the MVC Men's Golf Championship after 36 holes of play to help the Salukis to a five-shot advantage in the team standings at the par-70, 6,940-yard layout at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.   Teams will play 18 holes, beginning at 8:30 am Tuesday.  The Salukis tied for second last year and are looking to unseat Wichita State, the eight-time defending MVC champion.  It's a tight race as four teams are within seven strokes of the top spot.  Southern Illinois leads with a 36-hole total of 289-293--582; followed by Wichita State (288-299--587), Illinois State (293-296--589), and Missouri State (298-291--589).  The rest of the field is Bradley (5th, 599); Drake (t6th, 601); Evansville (t6th, 601); Loyola (t8th, 609) and UNI (t8th, 609).  Individually, Wihoit is joined in the top 5 by Saluki teammate Brandon Carlson (t5th, 145).  Illinois State's Trent Wallace is second after 36 holes with a two-round 142; Wichita State's Grant Bennett is next with a two-round 143, followed by Bradley's Drake Bushong at 144.  UNI's Kyle Driscoll is tied for fifth with Carlson at 145.  All nine teams have at least one player among the Top 15.

COURSE INFORMATION -- Prairie Dunes is an American original and one of the most scenic courses anywhere. You could never mistake pictures of it for any other American course, although it is easily confused with some of the best of the British Isles. Hutchinson, Kan., the center of the United States, is the last place anyone would expect to find a links style course with rolling hills reminiscent of the seaside courses in Scotland. Nestled five miles northeast of Hutchinson, Prairie Dunes is the hidden treasure of Kansas.
