2007 USTFCCA Women's Team Announced
NEW ORLEANS – Arizona State University’s Sarah Stevens and Wake Forest University’s Michelle Sikes were respectively named the 2007 Division I Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Athlete’s of the Year, as the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced the 2007 USTFCCCA Women’s Division I All-Academic Track and Field Team on Thursday.
Stevens, a sophomore, helped lead the Sun Devils to both the indoor and outdoor team titles this season. She won the shot put national title indoors with a mark of 59’7”, while finishing fifth in the weight throw.
Her victory in the shot put and marked only the second time in program history the event was won by an ASU student-athlete; male or female. ASU’s Shane Collins last won the event for the men at the 1990 national championships.
“Sarah Stevens epitomizes the student-athlete at Arizona State University. This past semester Sarah carried a 3.92 grade-point average, represented our track and field team on the Student Athlete Advisory Board, was actively involved in our community service program, all while leading our women’s program to an undefeated indoor and outdoor season,” Sun Devil head coach Greg Kraft said. “Sarah most recently earned a spot on the USA World Championship team that will compete in Osaka, Japan and Sarah has just completed her sophomore season. Wow!”
Sikes, a Mathematical Economics major, has had one of the most remarkable years of any student-athlete.
She won the 5000-meters at the Outdoor NCAA Championships in Sacramento to become the first female track athlete at Wake Forest to win an NCAA crown and recently earned a spot on the USA World Championship team after finishing third in the 5000-meters at the USA Track and Field Championships.
“Michelle built confidence with each passing week and race. I have been very fortunate to work with such a wonderful young person who possesses so much passion, compassion and at the same time the desire and the ability to line up and challenge anyone at anytime. She has a bright future ahead of her, not only in athletics but professionally as well,” head coach Annie Bennett said.
In addition to her many athletic accomplishments, Sikes (who maintained a 3.872 grade-point average) recently received the Marge Crisp Award as Wake Forest's top female athlete for 2006-07, and earlier this year was named a Rhodes Scholar as well as an Atlantic Coast Conference Postgraduate Scholar.
“She has dedicated herself all year while still maintaining her difficult academic schedule; graduating in Wake’s Honor Program and interviewing and winning the Rhodes Scholar award the weekend of NCAA Cross Country championships,” Bennett said. “She is a very goal oriented individual and she kept her eye on the target all season.”
Along with both Stevens and Sikes, five other 2007 All-Academic student-athletes won national championships during the indoor and outdoor seasons: April Kubishta (Arizona State, Outdoor Pole Vault), Elouise Rudy (Montana State, Indoor Pole Vault), Lindsey Blaine (Purdue, Javelin), Rhonda Watkins (UCLA, Indoor and Outdoor Long Jump) and Natasha Hastings (South Carolina, Indoor and Outdoor 400-meters).
Brigham Young University (18) and Stanford University (15) had the most student-athletes on the 2007 All-Academic team.
415 student-athletes representing 117 Division I colleges and universities make up the All-Academic team.
The USTFCCCA honors Division I individuals for their academic and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track season.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, one must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and obtain an NCAA automatic or provisional qualifying mark for the most recent indoor championships or an outdoor regional qualifying mark in their respective event.

2007 USTFCCA Men's Team Announced
NEW ORLEANS – McNeese State University’s Bradley Gebauer and University of Mississippi’s Barnabas Kirui were respectively named the 2007 USTFCCCA Division I Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Athlete’s of the Year, as the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced the 2007 USTFCCCA Men’s Division I All-Academic Track and Field Team on Friday.
Gebauer, a transfer from Michigan State University, won the 2007 indoor pole vault title after clearing 18’0.5” at the championship meet in March. The height tied Gebauer's indoor personal best and he becomes only the second McNeese athlete to win an indoor NCAA title. The other indoor champion came in 1996 when Michael Roberson won the high jump for the Cowboys.
"Brad has had a positive influence on his teammates and coaches during his time at McNeese State University. He exhibits championship qualities both on the track and in the classroom. His dedication to success is evident in everything he does. I look forward to seeing many more great accomplishments from Brad in the years to come,” said head coach Ty Sevin.
The exercise physiology graduate student carries a 3.50 grade-point average.
Kirui, the 2007 Southeastern Conference Runner of the Year, won the 10th national title in Ole Miss school history when he claimed the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June.
“Barnabas is a pleasure to be around and coach. He is a tremendous student-athlete and does all the right things. This award is a great honor for Barnabas. We are all very excited for him,” head coach Joe Walker said.
He won four SEC titles in 2006-07 becoming the fourth runner in league history to win all three distance races (5,000 and 10,000 meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase) at an SEC meet.
“Coach (Doug) Blackwell and Coach (Ng’anga’) Ngata have done such a great job coaching him,” added Walker.
The Kaplong, Kenya native is a banking and finance major carrying a 3.69 grade-point average.
Joining Gebauer and Kirui were several other indoor and outdoor national champions: Jake Dunkleberger (Auburn, Hammer), Scott Sellers (Kansas State, Outdoor High Jump), Shadrack Songok (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 10000-meters) and Egor Agafonov (Kansas, 35-lb Weight Throw).
233 student-athletes from 88 colleges and universities comprised the Division I Men’s All-Academic Team.
Brigham Young University and Stanford University led all schools with 11 student-athletes on the list. The University of Oregon was next with nine student-athletes.
