Newcomer of the Year: QB Julian Reese
Freshman of the Year: QB Tom Petrie
For the first time in league history, a player from Indiana State is Gateway Football Conference Newcomer of the Year. Julian Reese of Indiana State heads a list of 25 student-athletes named to the 2001 Gateway Football Conference All-Newcomer Team. In addition, Northern Iowa QB Tom Petrie earned league Freshman of the Year honors. Gateway coaches, sports information directors and a media panel selected the team.
Reese started 10 games for ISU and ended the year with 1,851 yards of total offense, the seventh most productive season in Sycamore history. Petrie, meanwhile, started the first eight games for Northern Iowa, before spraining both shoulders in the game at Illinois State. He completed 97-of-188 passes for 1,152 yards and seven TDs during the regular season. The top 11 vote-getters (plus ties) on offense and defense were named to the team.
