Kenneth “Buzz” Shaw, a chancellor at Syracuse University, was the initial recipient of the Valley’s “Lifetime Achievement Award”. A 1961 graduate of Illinois State University, Shaw was a three-year basketball letterman and still ranks tenth on the ISU all-time scoring list with 1,396 points.
A nationally respected administrator and educator who has served as a university president for more than 20 years, Shaw has been the chair of the NCAA Board of Directors for Division I and the chair of the Board of Directors of the Council of Independent Colleges and Universities.
A native of Granite City, IL, Shaw was awarded degrees from Towson State University (1979), Illinois College (1986), Illinois State University (1987), and Purdue University (1990). Shaw, who received his master’s degree in education from the University of Illinois-Urbana (1963) and a Ph. D. in sociology from Purdue University (1966), served as president of the University of Wisconsin system.
Shaw also was chancellor of the Southern Illinois University system from 1979 to 1986, president of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville from 1977 to 1979 and vice president/dean of the University for Towson State University from 1969 to 1977.
