MVC Leadership & Service Winter Awards Announced

In an effort to honor the achievements of exceptional student-athletes, the Missouri Valley Conference has created the MVC Leadership & Service Award (formerly the Good Neighbor Award).  Ten student-athletes have been named by Commissioner Doug Elgin as the honorees for the 2013-14 Winter season.

This year’s Winter honorees include Mason Alwan, Bradley, Men's Basketball; Carly Grenfell, Drake, Women's Basketball; Caitlin Harty, Evansville, Women's Swimming & Diving; Chloe Nelson, Illinois State, Women's Basketball; Kelly Steffen, Indiana State, Women's Track & Field; Lindsey Booker, Loyola, Women's Basketball; Bryonna Snow, Missouri State, Women's Basketball; Kayla McCormick, UNI, Women's Swimming & Diving; Shailey Brumley, Southern Illinois, Women's Swimming & Diving; Kelsey Jacobs, Wichita State, Women's Basketball.

In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition.  The Valley will recognize 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees.  Institutions select their MVC Leadership & Service Award honorees.

Mason Alwan, Bradley, Men's Basketball, Senior

  • 3.23 GPA in Marketing

  • Volunteer at Methodist Kourage Kids Camp

  • Integral part in the team's adoption of Johnah and Jarret Sahr (gone bowling, played basketball/football and carved pumpkins)

  • Reads to mentally disabled children

Carly Grenfell, Drake, Women's Basketball, Redshirt Junior

  • Took part in the Student Ambassador Program
  • Made contacts with ChildServe and Mercy Children's hospital
  • Spearheaded two child-to-team matches
  • Coordinated the "draft day" for the basketball team
  • Habitat for Humanity (assisted with siding and roofing)
  • Iowa State Fair (Blue Ribbon Foundation Fairgrounds 5k, sorted inventory and stuffed gifts bags for all participants)
  • Girl Scouts of America Convention (spoke to a roomful of elementary-aged girls about goal setting and values as a student-athlete)
  • York Duke Basketball Camps (volunteered at elementary/middle school camps to demonstrate drills and speak about experience as a college athlete)
  • Des Moines Step Into Action (interacted with children during the campaign to support the prevention of childhood obesity)
  • NCAA Track & Field Championship drug testing escort
  • Feeding the homeless volunteer
