ST. LOUIS - Indiana State's Geremy Guerrero has been named the MVC Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and headlines a group of 21 student-athletes named to the 2021 Missouri Valley Conference baseball scholar-athlete first team and honorable mention team, announced by the league office today. With a 3.96 grade point average pursuing a degree in intelligence analysis, Guerrero is a first-time selection on the scholar-athlete first team.
Southern Illinois earned the most first-team selections, four, including repeat honoree in Brad Harrison and first-time honorees Philip Archer, Noah Farmer and J.T. Weber. DBU placed three on the first team, while Bradley, Indiana State and Illinois State each placed two players. DBU's Jackson Glenn and Peyton Sherlin are repeat selections, while River Town is a first-time honoree. Bradley's Brendan Dougherty and Jed Moscot are first-time first-team selections, while Illinois State's Joe Butler is a repeat honoree and Jake McCaw is a first-time seletion. Indiana State's Guerrero and Max Wright are first-time selections. Valparaiso's Steven Fitzsimmons rounds out the first team honorees.
Nine of the 14 first-team spots are held by seniors, while three juniors and two sophomores complete the makeup of the squad. Six league schools are represented on the first team, with an additional seven student-athletes named to the honorable mention team. A total of 53 student-athletes were nominated for scholar-athlete honors.
The criteria for the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves, with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic (COVID freshmen did qualify) and academic standing at their institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
The Valley's scholar-athlete team is voted on by the league's baseball sports information directors.
