The Missouri Valley Conference initiated Scholar-Athletes of the Year for its sponsored sports for the first time in 2019-20.  In most cases, the honorees were determined by a vote of league sports information directors in conjunciton with the announcement of league scholar-athlete teams. 

For sports in which voting did not take place (and the scholar-athlete team was determined by finish at the MVC Championship), the Scholar-Athlete of the Year was awarded to the qualifying student-athlete with the highest finish (cross country) or the highest individual scorer (track & field, swimming & diving) with a 3.7 GPA or above.
