Scholar-Athlete of the Year David Perkins of Illinois State headlines the 2020 MVC Men’s Golf Scholar-Athlete First Team, announced by the league office today. Perkins, who led the MVC with his 69.39 stroke average in 2019-20, was the lone repeat first-team selection on the first-team unit. Perkins' single-season stroke average is the best in the MVC since at least 2003, and he ended the campaign ranked 19th in the NCAA in the Division I Golfstat player rankings.
He is joined on the First Team by Alex Ciaramitaro of Bradley; Dallas Koth of Evansville; Matthew Ladd of Evansville; Tim Lim of Drake; Lukas McCalla of Missouri State; Carter Stochl of UNI; Nate Vance of Loyola; Spencer Wagner of Evansville; and Garrett Willis of Valparaiso. Golf sports information directors in the conference voted on the team, comprised of 16 total golfers (10 first-teams and six-honorable mention picks).
The criteria for the MVC scholar-athlete team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for its Academic All-America® program. Nominees must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale), while the student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institutions and must have participated in at least 50 percent of his team’s rounds.
