NORMAL, Ill. – Dallas Baptist lefthanders Jordan Martinson and Burl Carraway limited Missouri State to 3 hits in a 1-0 Patriots win in game three of the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Tournament, Wednesday at Duffy Bass Field.
Martinson (8-3), got the win. He worked the first 7 2/3 innings, striking out nine, while Carraway allowed one hit while getting the final five outs for his third save. Davis Schwab (3-5) struck out six in 5 1/3 innings for the hard-luck loss. Hayden Juenger relieved Schwab and struck out four in 2 2/3 clean innings.
Missouri State mounted the first threat of the game in the sixth. Ben Whetstone led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Logan Geha. John Privitera walked, but DBU starter Jordan Martinson got a pop-up from Jack Duffy and a fielder’s choice from Drew Millas to escape the jam.
The only run in the game came in the bottom of the sixth. After one out, Augie Isaacson slapped a single to left. When Blayne Jones bunted in the air to the left side, Schwab collided with third baseman Privitera as both dove for the ball. It glanced off the tip of Schwab’s glove and for a hit.
Bryce Ball walked to load the bases for Jimmy Glowenke, who lined a single to right to put DBU ahead 1-0. Juenger relieved Schwab and ended the threat by striking out Jackson Glenn and Bandy.
The No. 1 seed Patriots (39-16) advance in the tournament to play at 3 p.m. Thursday against the loser of No. 3 Indiana State vs. No. 4 Evansville to be played Wednesday night. The No. 6 seed Bears (20-35) play at 11 a.m. Thursday against the loser of Illinois State-Southern Illinois to be played Wednesday afternoon.
