Hoops In the Heartland: #4 Illinois State 61, #5 Bradley 55

QUAD CITIES -  A big second half carried Illinois State into the MVC tournament semifinals for the first time in five years.

Simone Goods Katrina Beck each scored 11 of their 15 points after halftime, leading fourth-seeded Illinois State to a 61-55 victory over fifth-seeded Bradley, which had swept the Redbirds during the regular season.

Tete Maggett shrugged off two early fouls to add 13 points for Illinois State and Viria Livingston scored 10 for the Redbirds, who outscored Bradley 38-26 in the second half after trailing 29-23 at the break. It's the first time in 15 games that Bradley lost after leading at halftime.

Illinois State will play top-seeded Drake at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, the first appearance in the semis for the Redbirds since 2014. Drake swept the season series between the two, winning 82-64 in Normal and 88-61 in Des Moines eight days ago.

Bradley (20-10) led by as many as seven in the first half but could not hold off its I-74 rival. The Redbirds grabbed a 39-36 lead when Beck converted a three-point play on a baseline drive and they never trailed again.

After two ties, the last at 41-all, Illinois State went ahead to stay on Goods' two free throws with 31.2 seconds left in the third quarter. The Redbirds then scored the first six points of the fourth quarter, building a 49-41 lead that was enough to hang on.

Freshman Lasha Petree led Bradley with 19 points and Shunseere Kent added 10. The Redbirds kept Kent under control after she scored a career-high 25 in the regular-season finale at Drake last weekend.

Chelsea Brackmann scored six points for Bradley and grabbed 10 rebounds to break the school's single-season record. She ran her total to 327 to move past Leti Lerma, who had 324 in the 2016-17 season. Brackmann also climbed from 16th to 10th on the Valley's single-season rebounding list.

Bradley's 20 victories are the second-most in school history. It's just the third time a Bradley team has won 20 games.
