Men's and Women's Golf

MVC Announces Golfers of the Week (Sept. 7)

This week's MVC Golfers of the Week feature a pair of medalists -- Ethan Brue of Bradley and UNI's Sam DeBartolo, and a runner-up finisher -- Indiana State's Thilda Staubo.

MEN
Four men's programs were in action in two different tournaments this past week.  UNI was at the UNO Invitational, while Bradley, Loyola and Valparaiso competed at the Crusader Collegiate in Chesterton, Ind.

Northern Iowa's Sam DeBartolo captured medalist honors at the UNO Invitational. DeBartolo shot an even-par round of 71 on Saturday to win the title by five shots. DeBartolo recorded four birdies in his final round. His three-round total of 209 bested North Dakota State's Andrew Israelson's three-round score of 214.  DeBartolo recorded an opening-round 68 and followed it up with a one-under score of 70 in the second round. DeBartolo notched seven birdies in his first 36 holes.

Bradley's Ethan Brue,  a senior from Chandlerville, Ill., opened the 2017-18 season just like he began the 2016-17; by claiming medalist honors at the Crusader Collegiate played at the par-72 Sand Creek Country Club in Chesterton, Ind.  The defending Crusader Collegiate medalist, Brue defended his crown with a win in the 2017 event as he edged Loyola’s Orion Yamat by two strokes for top individual honors.  Brue found himself down a stroke after an opening round 74, but tuned in a one-under 71 in the second round and held a commanding seven-shot advantage on the field after 36 holes.  A final round two-over 74 helped Brue hold off Yamat, who carded a two-under 69 Wednesday to finish two shots behind Brue’s 54-hole 219.  The individual title was the fourth win as a Brave for Brue as he matched Lyle Burns (2014-16) school career record of four medalist honors.

Yamat capped off an impressive 36-hole stretch by tying his career low amidst rainy conditions.  The Maroon & Gold carded a final-round team score of 302 to bring their 54-hole team total to 924 (325-298-301).  Wright State (303-314-297=914) edged out Bradley (312-309-297=918) for the team title.

Valpo freshman Drew Alexander tied for the best score of any Crusader, finishing his first collegiate tournament at 228 (+12). He had the best round of any Valpo player on Wednesday, accumulating a 72 to finish tied for seventh overall.  Matching Alexander’s team-leading score of 228 was senior Michael Doherty, who carded a 73 on the final day of competition.
