DAY 3 RESULTS
No. 3 Wichita State 4, No. 6 Illinois State 0
WSU (29-25); ILS (25-23)

Wichita State got a five-hit, shutout performance from Jordan Cooper on the mound to beat Illinois State, 4-0, on Friday night in the final round of pod play in the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Tournament at Eck Stadium, as the Shockers played for the right to play in the conference title game.
Cooper (8-5) threw lights out on Friday night, allowing just five hits while striking out nine. On the flipside, the Shocker hitters supported him with all the runs he needed. Right fielder Ryan Engrav paced the Shocker offense, hitting 3-for-4 with a pair of clutch RBI.
For the Redbirds, starter Corey Maines went six innings to take the loss, giving up four runs on 10 hits, while walking two and striking out five. On offense, ISU managed five singles in the game, but couldn’t string any together.
The Shockers came out like a team on a mission, smacking a single just one batter into the game. By the end of the second, Wichita State had built a 3-0 lead.
Designated hitter Chris O’Brien led off the bottom of the second with a single and centerfielder Ryan Jones joined him on base when he walked. Right fielder Ryan Engrav continued his streak of clutch hitting with runners on, driving both of them in with a single up the middle. After shortstop Tyler Grimes drilled a two-out hit, catcher Cody Lassley did the same to drive him in and give the Shocks their lead, 3-0.
In the meantime, Cooper was in the groove. Through five innings, the freshman right-hander had sat five Redbirds down on strikes, walked one and allowed just three hits.  Cooper’s counterpart, Illinois State starter Corey Maines, fell into rhythm himself. After surrendering three runs in the second, Maines did not allow another to score for three innings while racking up five strikeouts in five innings.
Third baseman Chance Sossamon and the rest of the Shocker offense jolted Maines out of that rhythm in the bottom of the sixth. Left fielder Bret Bascue got the Shocks going by beating out an infield single. After swiping third, Bascue scored when Sossamon came through with an RBI single to put WSU ahead, 4-0.
Redbird closer Jim Sajewich took over for Maines to start the seventh inning. Although his two innings of relief were scoreless, the damage had been done.
Sossamon switched roles, coming in to close out Cooper’s shutout effort, to seal the win for the Shockers and date with the Creighton Bluejays for the championship game Saturday night.

No. 5 Southern Illinois 10, No. 2 Indiana State 6
SIU (24-28); INS (33-21)

Southern Illinois ended its 2009 season on a high note when it beat Indiana State, 10-6,in Friday morning's game at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in Wichita, Kan.

SIU, which scored just five times in its first two games of the tournament, erupted for 10 runs on 12 hits against the second-seeded Sycamores, marking the first time the Salukis put up 10 or more runs in a Valley Tournament game since 2005.
SIU trailed, 3-0, before scoring all 10 of its runs in the middle innings to chop down the Trees.  The Salukis used a leadoff error and four hits to push across five runs in the top of the fourth inning.
SIU scored again in the fifth and rallied for another big inning in the sixth.  Five hits, including four-straight with two outs, keyed SIU's four-run sixth. Bullock ignited the rally when he went opposite field for his team-high 11th home run of the season. Chris Murphy, Elmendorf and Stalter each doubled and Kelly singled to bring home the other three runs, pushing SIU's lead to 10-4.
ISU pulled to within five during its at-bat in the sixth, before posing its biggest threat in the eighth. With a run already in, the Sycamores walked three times and had the bases loaded with outs when SIU closer Bryant George relieved David Kington.  George threw just two pitches and forced ISU leadoff hitter Ryan Strausborger to pop-up to second, keeping the game at 10-6.
Right-hander Andrew Dunn (8-4) was credited with the win. Dunn gave up five runs on eight hits, while striking out three and walking two in six innings

No. 4 Creighton 7, No. 1 Missouri State 6 (10 innings)
CU (31-24); MSU (34-20)

Robbie Knight hit a key two-run single in the top of the 10th inning to give Creighton a 7-6 win over the Bears, punching its ticket to the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference championship game.  The Bluejays will face the winner of Wichita State and Illinois State in the MVC Tournament Championship at 7:00 p.m., on Saturday.

Creighton struck first with two runs in its first at bat. A disputed safe call at first put Elliot Soto on board with a single, and Aaron Meade hit Darin Ruf before Vicente Cafaro singled to load the bases with one out. Nick Becker hit the inning-ending double play ball as shortstop Travis McComack flipped to Kevin Medrano at second before the relay throw sailed high of first and two runs scored.

The Bears cut the lead in half two batters into the bottom of the first as Conway singled and Medrano tripled him home. Medrano scored on Ben Carlson’s ground out for a 2-2 tie.

CU went ahead on Soto’s single in the second, but RBI hits by Chris Playter and Trevor Rogers gave the Bears a 4-3 lead in the third.

The Bluejays scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to lead 5-4, but it was Playter and Rogers again in the seventh, providing back-to-back doubles with two outs for the tie.

Bob Lackovic (6-1) got the win, going 2.1 innings allowing one run without a hit. He struck out two and walked none. VanLeur picked up his team-leading sixth save of the season.

DAY 2 RESULTS
No. 4 Creighton 11, No. 3 Wichita State 0
CU (30-24); WSU (28-25)

Creighton freshman Brandon Koenigstein needed just 73 pitches to throw the first complete game no-hitter in school history to lift the Bluejays to an 11-0 victory over host Wichita State at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. It was the first no-hitter in MVC Tournament history.
Koenigstein struck out a career-high seven and faced the minimum 21 batters to improve to 5-0 on the season. He allowed just one runner all night, hitting Tyler Grimes on a 2-2 pitch to open the fourth frame, before Grimes was retired when Cody Lassley followed with a 5-4-3 double play. He threw 52 strikes in his 73 pitches, capping off his first complete game and shutout with Nick Becker's catch of a Clinton McKeever fly ball to end it.
The no-hitter was the second in CU history, joining the combined no-no by future Major Leaguer Dennis Rasmussen (5.1 IP) and Joe Franco (3.2 IP) against Kansas State on April 18, 1980. Wichita State had not been no-hit since 1984, when Indiana State's Matt Gardiner turned the trick.
Creighton scored twice in the top of the first inning while knocking Shocker starting pitcher Max Hutson from the game. Robbie Knight doubled to right-center and advanced to third on a sac bunt from Elliot Soto. Darin Ruf singled up the middle to plate Knight, his 200th career RBI. Vicente Cafaro was hit-by-pitch and after a strikeout, Ruf came around to score after walks to Nick Becker and Carson Vitale ended Hutson's evening after just 2/3 of an inning.
Creighton scored three runs in the fourth inning to build a 5-0 lead. With one down, Vitale singled up the middle versus Shocker reliever Clint Maune. He raced to third on a single to center by Jimmy Swift. After a walk to Ian Dike filled the bases with Bluejays, both Vitale and Swift scored when Knight laced a double down the left-field line. Dike who advanced to third on Knight's two-bagger, then scored when reliever Cobey Guy threw a two-out wild pitch.
The Bluejays used a six-run sixth inning to put the Shockers away, sending  11 men to the plate. Swift walked and moved to second on a single to right by Dike. Knight singled off the glove of first baseman Clinton McKeever to score Swift. Soto singled down the line to load the bases before Ruf singled through the left side to score Dike. Both Knight and Soto would score on Cafaro's double to left before an RBI groundout from T.J. Roemmich scored Ruf. CU closed the scoring on its big frame with a single by Nick Becker.
Creighton returns to action on Friday with a 3 p.m. game against regular-season champion and No. 1 seed Missouri State.  The winner will advance to Saturday's 7 p.m. championship game, where it will meet the victor of the 7 p.m. game between No. 3 Wichita State and No. 6 Illinois State.
No. 6 Illinois State 4, No. 2 Indiana State 3
ILS (25-22); INS (33-20)

Illinois State starter Ryan Camp got all the support he needed, both offensively and defensively, and Ryan Copeland made it stick with three perfect innings of relief as the sixth-seed Redbirds earned a 7-3 win over No. 2 seed Indiana State in the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament at Eck Stadium Thursday.
Illinois State turned two double plays and jumped out to 5-0 lead after four scoreless innings by Camp. Indiana State scored three runs against the freshman right-hander in the fifth and sixth, but Ryan Copeland retired all nine batters he faced in the final three innings to earn his first save of the season in just his second relief appearance.
Offensively, the Redbirds gave Camp a boost early. Illinois State’s first three batters reached and Collin Salzenstein scored on a single by Mike Stalowy. Indiana State starter Joe Rodriguez struck out Evan Kohli and got Ryan Court to ground out, but Anthony Ruffolo made it a 3-0 game with a two-out, two-RBI double. Gabe DeMarco led off the second with a solo home run, his second of the tournament to extend the Redbirds’ advantage, and a leadoff triple by Cole Marty in the fourth led to a sacrifice fly by Salzenstein and the 5-0 tally.
Defensively, Illinois State turned a double play with a runner in scoring position in the second inning and worked around a leadoff hit in the fourth with another twin-killing. Camp limited the Sycamores – the MVC’s hottest hitting team in the regular season – to three hits in the first four innings.
Camp ran into trouble in the fifth and a two-out single by Ryan Strausborger led to Indiana State’s first run. A pair of walks loaded the bases and brought up Nick Ciolli, who had two singles against Camp. Ciolli hit a sharp grounder towards the right side but Stalowy, the Redbirds’ second baseman, snagged it, spun around and threw to first in time to end the threat.
Illinois State scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and Camp recovered from a two-run blast by Brian Jett in the top of the sixth to wrap up a solid outing. Camp scattered six hits and three runs over six innings. He struck out three and walked three. Copeland entered the game and was unhittable over the final three innings.
The win moves Illinois State to 1-1 in the tournament – 1-0 in Pod 2 play – and sets up a showdown with Wichita State at 7 p.m. Friday at Eck Stadium for a chance to play in Saturday’s championship game.

No. 1 Missouri State 8, No. 5 Southern Illinois 4
MSU (34-19); SIU (23-28)

Missouri State used a three-run third inning to go ahead of Southern Illinois and keep the lead for the duration, going on to grab its ninth-straight win by an 8-4 final in its second contest at the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

The Bears scored in the top of the first when Kevin Medrano singled and got to third on two wild pitches to set up Ben Carlson’s two-out RBI single.  SIU tied it in the bottom half when Scott Elmendorf’s one-out walk turned into a run with Michael Stalter’s sac fly.

Buddy Baumann (11-1) put zeros on the board after the single run in the first, before leaving the game after seven.  He scattered seven singles and a double, walked one and struck out seven to give him 101 K's on the season, good for fifth in school history.

Missouri State loaded the bases three separate times in the second and came away with three runs.  Brett Marshall plated the first with a fly ball to center that fell in between three fielders, Tyler Ryun scored on a wild pitch and Brayden Drake lifted a sac fly to the warning track in center before the Bears left the bases loaded with a 4-1 lead.

Drake led off the fourth with a single and scored on Playter’s two-out RBI hit for a 5-1 lead.  Trevor Rogers drove in Medrano with a one-out, pinch-hit single in the sixth and Drake scored on a two-out throwing error by the SIU shortstop to push the lead to 7-1.  Aaron Conway swatted a solo homer in the ninth for Missouri State’s final run. The Salukis scored a run in the eighth and Stalter hit a two-run homer in the ninth.

The Bears play No. 4 Creighton in the 3 p.m. matchup tomorrow, with the winner advancing to Saturday’s 7 p.m. championship game.
DAY 1 RESULTS

No. 4 Creighton 5, No. 5 Southern Illinois 1
CU (29-24); SIU (23-27)

Creighton senior Jeremy Hauer tossed his first career complete game to lead the Bluejays to a 5-1 victory over Southern Illinois in the opening game of the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Tournament this afternoon.  The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Jays.

The two teams set in a deadlock through 5 ½ innings, before Creighton notched two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning against Saluki starter Adam Curynski.  The Bluejays padded their lead with three runs in the sixth inning, knocking Curynski from the game after building a 5-0 lead.

SIU scored its only run in the top of the ninth inning when Scott Elmendorf doubled down the line to start the ninth and came around to score after consecutive fly outs to center.  The Salukis were limited to five hits, two each by Elmendorf and Aaron Roberts and one from Mark Kelly.

Creighton improve to 1-0 in pod play, while Southern Illinois dropped to 0-1.  The Jays will face host and No. 3 Wichita State on Thursday in the 7 p.m. nightcap, while the Salukis take on No. 1 Missouri State at 11 a.m.

No. 1 Missouri State 9, No. 6 Illinois State 6
MSU (33-19); ILS (24-22)

Missouri State junior Daniel Torrente sent a walk-off grand slam deep over the left field wall in the bottom of the ninth inning to propel the Bears to a 9-6 come-from-behind victory over Illinois State in their opening game of the 2009 State Farm MVC Tournament at Eck Stadium in Wichita, Kan.

It was a back-and-forth game from the first pitch, as the Bears quickly fell behind 2-0 after the Redbirds scored on a pass ball in the top of the first inning and Evan Kohli launched a solo homer off the top of the wall in the second.

Missouri State evened things at 2-2 behind Tyler Ryun’s fielder’s choice in the second and MVC Player of the Year Brayden Drake’s RBI single in the third.  The Redbirds regained the lead with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, but Ryun answered again with a solo shot of his own, followed by a Kevin Medrano double to score another for the Bears’ first lead.

The battle ensued when Illinois State had three straight batters reach safely in the fifth, tying the game with Ryan Court’s RBI single; again Missouri State answered with Ben Carlson’s 16th home run of the season of the first pitch in the seventh inning to reclaim the lead at 5-4.  Redbird Gabe DeMarco then responded with a two-out, two-run shot in the eighth to turn the lead over to Illinois State, 6-5.
The Bears loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth after Carlson was hit by a pitch, Brett Marshall walked and Chris Playter singled to right before Torrente’s game-winner.

The Bears will face No. 5 Southern Illinois in the opener at 11 a.m. tomorrow, while the Redbirds await No. 2 Indiana State in Thursday’s 3 p.m. matchup.

No. 3 Wichita State 15, No. 2 Indiana State 7
WSU (28-24); INS (33-19)

Wichita State rode two home runs and a career-high six RBI from junior Ryan Jones to erase a three-run deficit and beat Indiana State, 15-7, in the first round of the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Tournament at Eck Stadium.
The Shocker bullpen pitched four scoreless innings and the offense came alive in the last three innings to give the Shockers a convincing win in their first pod-play game of the tournament.  WSU posted just three hits in the first six innings, but laced together 12 more in the last three to total 15.  Remington Johnson got the win for the Shockers after replacing starter Tim Kelley in the sixth. Johnson pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out three.
Jones led the offense with a 3-for-5 day, including a grand slam and a solo homer. The centerfielder also scored three times to go along with his six runs batted in. Ryan Engrav was 3-for-5, while Tyler Grimes and Bret Bascue each added two hits on the day. Bascue hit a solo shot in the ninth, his second of the season.

Wichita State came roaring out of the gates on the strength of Jones' grand slam, giving the Shockers a 4-0 lead in the top of the first against Indiana State starter Eric Valdez.  Valdez settled in after that allowing just two hits in the next five innings, while his offense took advantage of WSU miscues with some timely hitting. The Sycamores put up two runs in both the second and third innings to tie the score at 4-4.

Indiana State added two more runs on a bases loaded single that ricocheted off of Kelley and slipped into the outfield. The Sycamores took the lead and extended it in the fifth and sixth on a fielder's choice RBI from Ferrell and an RBI double by Brady Shoemaker to chase Kelley with a 7-4 lead.
Wichita State battled back against Valdez and the Sycamores in the top of the seventh when Jones smashed an opposite field home run, tying his career-high for RBI with five.  The next batter, Bret Bascue, hit a dribbler down the third base line for an infield single.  An errant throw on the play allowed Bascue to move to second, and Ryan Engrav knocked him in to cut the lead to one, 7-6, with nobody out.  ISU reliever Michael Manus struck out pinch hitter Taylor Brown and then got Cody Lassley to line into a double play to kill the Shocker rally.
The Shockers exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 14-7 lead. The first seven batters for WSU reached base including two walks, two hit batters and three RBI singles. O'Brien, Jones, and Engrav each knocked in runs, with Engrav's single bringing in two before an out was recorded. Later in the inning, Andrew Letourneau and Clint McKeever got in the action with RBI singles. Letourneau knocked in two with a grounder up the middle, and McKeever brought home one with a liner into center.
The No. 3 Shockers will be back in action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. against No. 4 Creighton, while No. 2 Indiana State will meet No. 6 Illinois State in the 3 p.m. matchup.
