PEORIA, IL – Top-seeded Missouri State battled fifth-seeded Evansville to a 0-0 double overtime draw in Friday's first semifinal match at Shea Stadium in Peoria, Ill., with the Bears advancing to the final of the MVC Men's Soccer Tournament on Sunday after taking out the Aces in penalty kicks, 6-5.
With no score in regulation the match advanced to overtime. During the two overtime periods only three total shots were attempted between the two squads, but neither team could connect, sending the game into PKs.
Both teams connected their first two attempts in the shootout. In the third round Ian Jones saw his shot get saved by the Aces goalkeeper Matthew Keller making the score 3-2 in Evansville favor.
Goalkeeper Liam Priestley pulled in a massive save to keep the Bears in the match and allow Wilkin to even the score to 3-3.
The next two rounds saw conversations on both sides to move the score to 5-5. Priestley came up with another amazing save to start the seventh round to give the advantage to the Bears.
Junior Ian Wu lined up for the possible game winning kick and went straight for the ball, banking it in on the left side of the goal to advance the Bears to the championship game.
The Bears look for their second MVC Tournament title Sunday at 1 p.m. against Central Arkansas.
Evansville ends its season at 11-8-2.
