2009 State Farm MVC Swimming & Diving Championship

Missouri State claimed the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Swimming & Diving Championship with 944.50 points at the Dr. Edward Shea Natatorium on the campus of Southern Illinois University.  The title was the second-straight for the Bears.

Day Three Recap

Lauren Terzis of Illinois State claimed the title in the 1,650 freestyle in MVC-record time (16:58.19), to add to her 500-yard freestyle title.  Dimi Drakopoulos of Missouri State was second and Christina Schmidgall of Evansville was third.

 

Missouri State’s Jordan Hawkins set her third MVC record of the meet in the 200-yard backstroke, touching in 1:58.71.  Kelly Dvorak of Southern Illinois was second and Francy Palma of Missouri State took third.

 

Isabel Madeira of Southern Illinois led a 1-2 Saluki punch in the 100 freestyle, taking the title in 50.81, just ahead of teammate Therese Mattsson (50.93).  Evansville’s Hannah Quast took home third with a time of 51.80.

 

Fran Moody of Missouri State claimed the 200-yard breaststroke title with a time of 2:21.72, with two Southern Illinois performers taking sports two and three, respectively.  Keli Kramer (2:23.81) and Marcela Teixeira (2:24.78) took second and third.

 

Chelsea Dirks-Ham of Missouri State won the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:03.76, topping teammate Breanna Hollar (2:05.11) and Illinois State’s Amy Schaefer (2:08.24).

 

Southern Illinois claimed another relay title in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final event of the championship.  The Salukis clocked in a 3:24.04 in the final to get past Missouri State (3:25.72).  Illinois State (3:31.68) took third.

 

 

Day Two Recap

Missouri State jumped out in front early in the 200-yead medley relay, the first final on day two of the State Farm MVC Swimming & Diving Championship, and held on for the title with a time of 1:45.07, just ahead of Southern Illinois (1:45.69). Illinois State took third in a time of 1:48.18.

 

Freshman Brianna Willoughby of Missouri State claimed her second MVC title in as many events, this one in record-setting fashion in the 400-yard Individual Medley.  The Bears’ freshman touched at 4:26.54, nearly five seconds ahead of teammate Jessica Bennett.  Hilary Morrow, also from Missouri State, took third.

 

Chelsea Dirks-Ham of Missouri State took home the 100-yard butterfly title with an MVC-record swim of 55.34.  Samantha Dvorak of Southern Illinois edged Missouri State’s Breanna Hollar for second place, 56.78 to 56.87, respectively.

 

Therese Mattsson of Southern Illinois set a new meet record in claiming the title in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.79.  Matana Wellman of Missouri State took second (1:50.39) and SIU’s Isabel Madeira claimed third (1:50.68).

 

Illinois State’s Lindsey Dinkelman jumped to an early lead and held on for the win in a tight finish to the 100-yard breaststroke.  Dinkelman touched the wall in 1:05.62, just ahead of Missouri State’s Fran Moody (1:05.78) and Southern Illinois Marcela Teixeira (1:05.81).

 

Jordan Hawkins of Missouri State won her second-straight 100-yard backstroke title, this one in MVC-record fashion in a time of 54.48.  Teammate Chelsea Dirks-Ham took second (55.87) and Southern Illinois’ Kelly Dvorak was third (56.13).

 

Illinois State’s Katelyn Prorok took home the 1-meter diving title with 264.60 points, topping Southern Illinois’ Emily Gable (255.55) and Missouri State’s Heather Fulton (237.70).

 

Southern Illinois closed competition on day two with an MVC-record swim in the 800-yard freestyle, winning the event in a time of 7:30.75 behind a strong anchor leg from Therese Mattsson.  Missouri State finished second (7:33.58) and Illinois State was third (7:35.14).

 

Missouri State holds the team lead heading into the final day of competition with 626 points.

 

 

Day One Recap

 

Southern Illinois kicked off the finals in record fashion, setting a new MVC Championship record in the 200-yard freestyle, hitting the wall 1:33.45 to break the previous mark by more than a second.

 

Illinois State freshman Lauren Terzis took home the first MVC title of her career, setting a new championship record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:55.45 to win out of lane seven.  Terzis took the lead with 150 yards remaining and pushed the pace to win by nearly three seconds.  Chelsea Hartman of UNI finished in second-place with a time of 4:58.24.  Missouri State’s Hilary Morrow was third in 4:58.97. 

 

Brianna Willoughby of Missouri State was the second freshman winner on the opening day of the championship, claiming the 200-yard Individual Medley over teammate Breanna Hollar.  Willoughby touched in 2:05.50, Hollar in 2:05.84. Southern Illinois Kelly Dvorak was third with a time of 2:07.62.

 

In the 50-yard freestyle, Missouri State’s Jordan Hawkins won her third-straight MVC title, this time setting the conference record with a time of 22.87. She is the second swimmer to win the 50 free three times in her career, joining Evansville’s Kim Dodson (1999-02), who was the previous MVC record holder.  Southern Illinois’ Isabel Madiera and Therese Mattsson took second- and third-place, respectively. 

 

The Missouri State quartet of Jordan Hawkins, Breanna Hollar, Chelsea Dirks-Ham and Matana Wellman capped the night with a convincing win in the 400-yard medley relay, claiming the title in conference-record time of 3:44.93.  Southern Illinois (3:49.82) was second and Illinois State (3:55.13) claimed third.

 

After the first day of competition, Missouri State leads the team competition with 231 points, followed by Southern Illinois (189), Illinois State (163), UNI (110) and Evansville (72).

 

Action will resume on Friday at 11 a.m. Central with the 200-yard medley relay.    

 

 

 

Pre-Championship Poll 

Missouri State, with two first-place votes and 21 overall points, has been tabbed as the pre-championship favorite at the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Swimming & Diving Championship, Feb. 12-14 in Carbondale, Ill., hosted by Southern Illinois University.

 

The Bears are the favorites by the slimmest of margins over Illinois State (20 points and two first-place votes) and Southern Illinois, with 19 points and a first-place vote. 

 

UNI, with eight points, and Evansville (seven points) round out the poll.

 

The Bears hold top-five times in 20 events on the MVC Best List, including the top overall times in the 100 butterfly (top-three), 200 butterfly, 100 and 200 backstroke, 200 and 400 individual medley, 400 IM relay and the 1- and 3-meter dives.

 

Chelsea Dirks-Ham leads MSU with three MVC-bests in the 100 and 200 fly and the 100 backstroke. 

 

Illinois State has posted the Valley’s best time in three events – 500 freestyle, 1000 freestyle and 100 breast stroke – and holds top-five times in 18 events entering the championship. 

 

Lauren Terzis holds the league’s top 500 and 1000 freestyle times of the season for ISU.

 

Host Southern Illinois is tabbed third in the pre-championship poll and boasts eight times that lead the MVC heading into the conference meet.

 

Therese Mattsson holds the best times in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle to pace SIU’s list of 18 events with top-five league performances.

 

UNI’s Chelsea Hartman holds the conference’s top 1,650-yard freestyle time by nearly 20 seconds and Christina Schmidgall of Evansville holds a top-five time in the 200 freestyle and will look to challenge for the league crown.
